Agriculture and Environmental Health in Central Europe:
Opportunities for Research and Intervention

Format of Conference

Each of the five countries was represented by a delegation composed of five to seven policy makers, leading scientists, health care providers, social insurance groups, and non-governmental organizations with expertise in areas of rural health, agricultural health and safety, and environmental health. Each delegation was responsible for collectively developing a country report that would inform the conference participants on particular country issues, the strengths of their research and intervention programs, and perceived needs.

In addition to Central European delegates, the program committee invited agricultural health and safety experts from Finland, Norway, Sweden, and the Netherlands; rural and environmental health professionals from Wales, the World Health Organization and the US; representatives of the USEPA, USAID, and the US National Cancer Institute, and international agribusiness persons. The role of the non-Central European participants was to provide possible models of programs and actions, and to help stimulate idea-sharing and brainstorming discussions.
