Silo Worker |
Summary
Case Report: The 27-year-old
victim was repairing the sweep auger of a silo bottom unloader,
laying behind the auger shield on the silo floor. He shouted that
he was clear of the auger and a partner turned it on to clean
it out. Apparently, the victim reached over the auger to move
a hanging trouble light and caught his sleeve on the auger, which
severed his arm and shoulder causing extensive chest injury.

Farm Laborer |
Summary
Case Report: A 65-year-old
farm helper was working alone unloading corn out of a gravity
flow grain wagon--was dumping through a floor grate into an auger
system. Apparently due to wet and clumped grain, the auger must
have clogged, for the victim removed the heavy metal grate. He
must have slipped and got his right leg caught in the auger, which
amputated his leg in the mid-thigh. The victim lost significant
blood before being found. He was dead on arrival at the local
hospital.

farmer |
Summary
Case Report: 69 year old
farmer was driving a tractor pulling a grain wagon. He was turning
around in his farmyard positioning the wagon to fill it with grain
from an auger next to a grain bin. The wagon caught and dragged
the auger causing it to fall over. The auger hit another bin,
then hit the farmer in the head, knocking him off the tractor.
He was killed instantly from head injuries. No ROPS or cab were
on the tractor.

farm laborer |
Summary
Case Report: 42 year old
worker for a large farm was helping to unload grain from a bin
filled with 8 feet of corn. A bottom auger was running. When grain
stopped flowing, the victim and a co-worker went inside the bin
and began probing the grain to break up a suspected grain clump
or bridge. The grain caved in burying the victim. The other man
barely pulled himself free and ran to shut off auger. Victim died
of suffocation.
