PILOT AND FEASIBILITY PROJECTS

Certification in Human Subject Protections

NIOSH Policy
All investigators conducting human subject’s research are required to complete an education program and become "certified" in human subject protections. All investigators associated with a NIOSH funded research project are required to complete an education program which is approved by the NIH. The UI CITI program is approved by the NIH, but is only available to University of Iowa faculty, staff and students. Completion of a certification in a human subject protection program which is approved by NIH is required of researchers outside of the University of Iowa as well. NIH has provided an online course which is available to these researchers.

UI Investigators, i.e. current student, staff or faculty at the University of Iowa:
The online course that fulfills the NIH requirement for UI researchers is called CITI and is available at http://www.citiprogram.org. Instructions for using the CITI program are on the site. The UI CITI program is approved by the NIH, but is only available to University of Iowa faculty, staff and students. If you are not currently faculty, staff or student at UI please do not attempt to take the CITI course.

Non UI Investigators, i.e not currently affiliated with the University of Iowa as a student, faculty or staff:
The online course that fulfills the NIH requirement for non UI researchers is available at http://cme.cancer.gov/clinicaltrials/learning/humanparticipant-protections.asp. This course is open to non UI affiliated researchers and is provided by NIH.
