The Occupational Injury Prevention Research (OIPR) program, will prepare graduate students to meet the need for new academic faculty in the field of occupational injury prevention. An OIPR traineeship will support progress toward a doctorate in any of the following departments:
- Department of Occupational and Environmental Health
- Department of Epidemiology
- Department of Community and Behavioral Health
OIPR trainees will complete core courses that combine the curricular requirements of these departments and will conduct original research. The fellowship research will be guided by nationally recognized faculty and can include collaborations throughout the University and with public, private, and community partners.
Financial Support
Funding opportunities are excellent for students admitted to the Occupational Injury Prevention Research program.
Traineeships and assistantships are offered through the Heartland Center, a NIOSH-funded ERC. Support may be in the form of tuition and/or monthly stipend. Funded positions sponsored by NIOSH are available for U.S. citizens only.
The OIPR traineeship may provide full support of tuition and stipend during the first years of training. Doctoral research can be supported by externally funded research grants (see Research Opportunities). Faculty will assist fellows in pursuing support for dissertation work through collaboration with existing projects, pilot grants, and/or direct applications to external funding agencies.
Training Program Requirements
The OIPR training program offers the PhD degree in Occupational and Environmental Health, Epidemiology or Community and Behavioral Health.
Doctoral students are expected to enter the program with an MS degree or to complete an MS degree as part of their graduate training. If you are admitted to the program with a bachelor's degree, you will earn a master's in either Occupational and Environmental Health, Epidemiology or Community and Behavioral Health before enrolling in the PhD program.
