Tractor Risk Abatement and Control: The Policy Conference
This final report contains the results of the first consensus process to establish a national strategy for controlling the number one killer of American farm family members and farm workers: tractor-related injuries. In 1995, eight multidisciplinary stakeholders formed a planning committee to convene a TRAC Policy Conference dedicated to the goal of preventing as many tractor-related deaths and injuries to farm workers as possible. The conference, which resulted in this report, was held in at The University of Iowa in September of 1997.

Iowa Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation Air Quality Study
In June, 2001, Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack asked the presidents of Iowa State University and of The University of Iowa to assist the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the Environmental Protection Commission with addressing public health and environmental concerns arising from air emissions from concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs). With the concurrence of both presidents, Iowa Department of Natural Resources Director Jeffrey Vonk charged the College of Public Health at the University of Iowa and the College of Agriculture at Iowa State University to recommend standards for air quality and address other issues regarding CAFOs.

Did you know?
Dosimeter data on large-scale swine confinement facility workers revealed all assessments to be greater than 90 decibels measured on the A-scale (dBA), which exceeds the 85 dBA National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Recommended Exposure Limit (REL). RELs were exceeded for all of the employees in the facility, as well as the part-time employees who power-washed the farrowing rooms.
