CPH Celebrates 10th Anniversary
Ten Years of Public Health Education, Research and service
The College of Public Health celebrated its 10th anniversary during the 2009-2010 academic year by hosting local events, reaching out to statewide audiences, and taking part in activities that promote broader awareness of public health. - April 16 - Green D.R.E.A.M. Waste Audit. In honor of Earth Month, waste audit volunteers sorted garbagecollected from designated areas on the health sciences campus to see how much of waste is actually recyclable. View photos...

- Jan. 25 - "Katrina's Children" Film Screening and Discussion Panel. In honor of the MLK Celebration of Human Rights, the College of Public Health, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and the Landlocked Film Festival presented the film "Katrina's Children." - Dec. 7-18 - Ten for Ten Donations Drive. For ten-working days, the College of Public Health hosted a donations drive for the Johnson County Crisis Center. Faculty, staff, and students were invited to donate items that are the Crisis Center’s top ten most-needed. Read more...

at IREH on
the Oakdale Campus. Waste audits analyze an organization's waste
stream by sorting a portion of a typical day's trash.

- Nov. 9 - CPH Alumni and Friends Reception in Philadelphia. The college hosted a reception for alumni and friends in the Philadelphia area and for those attending the annual APHA meeting and exposition. The reception provided an opportunity for alumni and friends to reconnect and meet and talk with Dean Curry, faculty, students and staff.
- Nov. 4 - UI Health Fair. The College of Public Health and Nutrition Center c0-sponsored a booth at the Fall Health Fair for UI faculty and staff. The effort won the Best Booth Award.

- Aug. 27 - "Garbage Dreams" panel discussion at the Landlocked Film Festival, Englert Theatre, Iowa City.
CPH experts led the post-film discussion about "Garbage Dreams," a 2009 documentary about a garbage village near Cairo, Egypt, where occupants survive by recycling 80 percent of the city's garbage. This was the opening film for the Landlocked Film Festival.

- Aug. 22 - "Public Health Putt-Putt" at the Iowa State Fair, Iowa State Fairgrounds, Des Moines. The CPH showcased public health to fairgoers with a golf-putting contest to educate and inform participants about the many ways that public health enhances everyday life.
