Dean's Welcome
Welcome to the University of Iowa College of Public Health web site. The College of Public Health was inaugurated on July 1, 1999, becoming the 11th college and first new college at The University of Iowa in 50 years. In the eight years since its formation, the college has achieved remarkable progress. Significant indicators of this progress include:
- Since the college's establishment, the number of primary faculty has approximately doubled.
CPH faculty list.
- In FY 2007, college faculty served as principal investigators on grants and contracts totaling $39.9 million. Projects on which college faculty collaborated as co-investigators represented an additional $27.7 million.
- In calendar year 2007, more than 440 students were enrolled in public health degree programs. An additional 500 graduate, undergraduate, and certificate students were enrolled in public health coursework.
Academic program details.
- Plans are advancing for a new academic home for the College of Public Health. This environmentally sustainable facility, built on a prominent site affording spectacular views of the UI campus, will house classrooms and student space, the college's academic departments, and collegiate administration. Updates on this project can be found on the College of Public Health academic building website.
This is a time of dramatic growth and development, not only for the College of Public Health, but for the field of public health in general. From the challenges presented by chronic health conditions to concerns about emerging infectious diseases and growing awareness of the critical need to protect our environment, we are continually reminded of the interdependent nature of the modern world and the importance of protecting health at the community level.
Through its teaching, research, and practice activities, the College of Public Health is helping students and society respond to new and emerging threats, as well as longstanding public health concerns, including air and water quality, aging, health care quality and services, tobacco dependence, and substance abuse.
