James A. Merchant, MD, DrPH, Dean

Dr. Merchant photo Dr. James A. Merchant was appointed as the first dean of the University of Iowa College of Public Health on July 1, 1999. Dr. Merchant is a nationally known expert on occupational and environmental health, rural health, and public health policy. He served as head of the UI College of Medicine’s Department of Preventive Medicine and Environmental Health from July 1, 1997, to June 30, 1999, directed the department’s Division of Occupational and Environmental Health and Institute for Rural and Environmental Health from 1983-1997, and taught in the department since 1981.

Christopher G. Atchison, MPA - Associate Dean for Public Health Practice

Chris Atchison photoThe associate dean for public health practice has primary responsibility for representing the college in this area within the state, nationally, and internationally, and also directs the Institute for Public Health Practice, which manages the college’s public health practice outreach and training activities.

Ann M. Coady - Assistant Dean for Administration

Joe Dan Coulter, PhD - Associate Dean for Diversity

Joe Dan Coulter PhotoThe associate dean for diversity promotes, coordinates, and provides leadership on collegiate diversity objectives; acts as liaison on diversity issues with College of Public Health departments, other colleges, and University committees; chairs the college's diversity committee; and works to recruit a more diverse faculty and student body.

Mary Lober Aquilino, MSN, PhD, FNP - Assistant Dean and Director of the Master of Public Health Degree Program

Mary Lober Aquilino PhotoThe assistant dean and director of the Master of Public Health (MPH) degree program directs the MPH program and oversees MPH processes such as recruitment, admissions, orientation, and academic advising; coordinates MPH focus areas, subtracks, and dual and joint degrees; assures the quality of educational programs; and represents the college nationally in MPH program development.

Tanya Uden-Holman, MA, PhD - Associate Dean for Education and Student Affairs

Tanya Uden-Holman PhotoThe associate dean for education and student affairs directs collegiate educational programs; oversees student affairs processes, such as admissions, recruitment, and orientation; leads accreditation processes; and represents the college nationally in public health education. The associate dean also leads the college’s strategic planning functions.
