Distance Education FAQ

Learner FAQs

What is Distance Education?

The United States Distance Learning Association defines distance learning as "the acquisition of knowledge and skills through mediated information and instruction, encompassing all technologies and other forms of learning at a distance. The instruction may be asynchronous (not "real time") or synchronous ("real time").

Can I Take A Distance Education Course If I'm Not Enrolled in the Masters of Public Health Program?

A person can take a limited number of the courses offered through distance education without being formally enrolled in the Masters of Public Health program. These courses are developed for persons that have a background in the field of Public Health and additional course work towards the masters in public health can not be pursued until after graduate admission requirements are met.

Do you offer any degree programs that can be completed entirely through distance education?

The only program we offer that can be completed entirely through distance education courses is our Certificate in Public Health. Approximately fifty percent of the coursework required for our M.P.H. degree can be completed via distance education, but the other fifty percent must be completed on-campus during the regular semester. Our Master of Health Administration, Master of Science, and doctoral programs all require on-campus enrollment.

Why Do Students Take Distance Learning Courses?

Distance Learners overwhelmingly respond that they simply don't have time to come to campus on a regular basis. Because Iowans are separated by great distances, the use of learning technologies allows people practicing in the public health arena to stay at home with their families and continue working in their community.

How do I register for a College of Public Health Distance Education course?

Registration for CPH Distance Education courses is handled by the Center for Credit Programs. Registration information and an online registration form can be accessed from the website at Center for Credit Programs.

Is Distance Learning Right for Everyone?

No. Distance Learning requires the learner to be extremely self motivated. Distance learners will have to be resourceful in finding ways to access periodicals and other reference materials that are found on campus. Lastly distance learners will also be required to communicate with the instructor and others in class through the use of technology based communications. This means the distance learner must meet some standard technology requirements before they will be allowed to enter the class.
