Biostatistics Summer Initiative
In conjunction with the Alliance
Program Information
The objective of the Biostatistics Summer Initiative (BSI) is to provide biostatistical training and applied research opportunities for underrepresented minority students. Interested undergraduate junior or senior minority students (Hispanic, Latino, Native Americans, African Americans, Native Hawaiians, and other Pacific Islanders) with math or biological sciences backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
The BSI offers seven weeks of summer training, including a five-week Introduction to Biostatistics course followed by a two-week research internship. During their coursework, students will learn about descriptive statistics, probability distributions, and statistical techniques used in the analysis of biomedical studies. In addition, the course will serve as a fundamental building block for students to understand the field of biostatistics.
In the second week of the program, students will be matched with a Biostatistics faculty member and graduate research assistant for their research projects. The projects will give students exposure to research and opportunities to see medical science in action through biostatistics. After the supervised research, students present their accomplished research to faculty and students at an Alliance meeting.
Information on opportunities such as scholarships, training grant programs, and assistantships within the College of Public Health will be presented to students. Students excelling in the summer training/internship are invited to apply to continue their studies as biostatistics graduate students in our department.
The summer program is being coordinated by Dr. Gideon Zamba, biostatistician, member of the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, and member of the Biostatistics Consulting Center; Dr. Jacob Oleson, biostatistician and faculty member in the Center for Public Health Statistics; Dr. Brian Smith, biostatistician and Director, Biostatistics Core, Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center; and Dr. Kathryn Chaloner, Head of the Department of Biostatistics.
Students in the BSI will receive a scholarship either through the Alliance program or through the Department of Biostatistics. Lodging will be provided at the University of Iowa jointly with the AGEP/Alliance students.
