Iowa Summer Institute in Biostatistics
In conjunction with the Alliance
Program Information
The objective of the Iowa Summer Institute in Biostatistics (ISIB) is to provide biostatistical training and applied research opportunities to undergraduates. This program at the University of Iowa is sponsored by the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Priority for admission will be given to underrepresented and disadvantaged students and to students from small liberal arts colleges which do not offer substantial course work in statistics or biostatistics. Interested current sophomore and junior undergraduate students are encouraged to apply and Hispanic, Latino, Native Americans, African Americans, Native Hawaiians, and other Pacific Islanders and also disadvantaged students are especially encouraged to apply. Those majoring in mathematics or biological sciences (or both) are best suited for the program. Graduating seniors and beginning MS students are also welcome to apply, and some will be admitted, but priority will be given to undergraduates who will not have graduated by the summer.
The ISIB will be 7 weeks: instruction will be through case based instruction of real biomedical research; computer laboratory training; projects; and clinical and translational research enrichment activities.
Coursework will focus on clinical trials and spatial models used in the analysis of biomedical studies. In addition, the course will serve as a fundamental building block for students to understand the field of biostatistics.
Two weeks into the program, students will be matched with a Biostatistics faculty member and graduate research assistant for their research projects. The projects will give students exposure to research and opportunities to see medical science in action through biostatistics.
After the supervised research, students present their accomplished research to faculty and students at a symposium jointly sponsored by the ISIB and two NSF summer research programs in the mathematical sciences.
Roundtrip transportation, housing and meals will be provided. Enrichment activities will be provided in conjunction with the other NSF summer undergraduate research programs in the mathematical sciences at The University of Iowa.
The summer program is being coordinated by Dr. Gideon Zamba, biostatistician, member of the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center and member of the Biostatistics Consulting Center; Dr. Jacob Oleson, biostatistician and faculty member in the Center for Public Health Statistics; Dr. Brian Smith, biostatistician and Director, Biostatistics Core, Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center; and Dr. Kathryn Chaloner, Head of the Department of Biostatistics
and Director of Biostatistics for the Institute for Clinical and Translational Science
.
Prior to summer 2010, a small Biostatistics Summer Program was offered through the Alliance. Anticipated enrollment for this 2010 NIH sponsored SIBS program is 14-16 sutdents.

Previous Sessions
There are no fees or tuition costs associated with participation in the Program. Roundtrip transportation, housing and meals will be provided and four semester hour credits will be given (whether or not these credits will transfer varies and students should check with their home institution). Lodging will be provided at the University of Iowa jointly with the NSF Alliance and VIGRE undergraduate students hosted by the Department of Mathematics. Participants have full access to university computing systems, libraries and other academic and recreational facilities.
Information on opportunities such as scholarships, training grant programs, and assistantships in Biostatistics and Public Health will be presented to students. Students are encouraged to apply to continue their studies in a biostatistics graduate program.
