Prospective Students

Financial Assistance

The Department of Biostatistics in the College of Public Health at The University of Iowa has multiple sources of financial aid available for graduate students. Most biostatistics graduate students receive some form of financial aid.

Research assistantships provide the majority of support available to our graduate students. Most students have research assistantships in which they are required to work either in our Biostatistics Consulting Center or on specific research projects. These research projects are usually funded by the federal government, particularly the National Institutes of Health. The students working in the Biostatistics Consulting Center are more likely to work on several small projects across a variety of medical disciplines.

A limited number of teaching assistantships are also available in introductory service biostatistics courses.

A 25% or greater appointment as a graduate research or teaching assistant provides a student with a stipend, considerable savings due to in-state tuition fees and partial tuition scholarship, and a contribution toward a health insurance policy.

A limited number of competitive fellowships are available. The sources for these fellowships include the University of Iowa Fellowship Program, private pharmaceutical firms and the National Institutes of Health.

Our assistantships and fellowships are for the nine months of the academic year. However, students are often offered support for the summer as well.

Applicants who wish to be considered for financial assistance should complete their application as early as possible. Applications completed prior to January 15 will receive priority consideration for financial assistance. The closing date for completed applications is March 15; although, if space is available in the program, applications may be considered beyond that date. The likelihood of financial assistance decreases, however, for applications received later in the year.

No special form is needed to apply for financial support from the Department of Biostatistics. All applications are assumed to also be applications for financial support unless otherwise noted by the applicant.
