Winter is coming! BSO would like to invite you and your families to our annual winter social event on Feb 2nd, 2008 in the Coral Ridge Mall.  BSO will pay the ticket fee. We are expecting to see you around!

09/01/2007 BSO Election Results

The votes for President of BSO 2007-2008 have been tallied and we'd like to congratulate Elizabeth Dastrup as the new BSO President! We are sure that she will do a wonderful job as the BSO president. The other BSO volunteers will also serve in the leadership of the BSO 2007-2008 and their positions will be determined at a later date.

BSO would like to invite all Biostat students, faculty, staff and your families to our Badminton activity on this Friday, February 23rd. We will meet at 4 pm on the Badminton Court in the Field House.  BSO has prepared some racquets, but please take your own if possible.

01/30/2007 Stanley Undergraduate and Graduate Awards for International Research

A chance of being involved in oversea research and getting funding is available now through applying for the Stanley Undergraduate and Graduate Awards for International Research.

The Stanley competition is open to all University of Iowa students. The funding ranges from $1,000 to $3,000 for undergraduates and $2,000 for graduate students. Applicants are expected to spend a minimum of one month and in most cases, will not exceed three months in the field. No previous overseas experience is required. 

The deadline for the 2007 competition is FEBRUARY 21!!! For application information and more on funding for international research visit our website http://intl-programs.uiowa.edu or contact the IP Grants Office at ip-grants@uiowa.edu or (319) 335-2823. Recipients will be notified in late March and must use the award by May 2008.

08/22/2006 Biostatistics MS Comprehensive Exams Meeting

Time: Aug. 30 th Wed. 4:00PM – 5:00PM

Place: 1117 MERF

BSO is presenting the first event of Fall 2006.

As many of you know, the Biostatistics MS comprehensive exams are going to have a few changes for this coming year. The date of the exams along with the format are some of the changes. We are very pleased to have Dr. Jeffrey Dawson meet with us to discuss some of the changes.

08/22/2006 BSO Elections

Welcome back to the University of Iowa, Department of Biostatistics. We'd like to thank those who participated in the BSO last year for all of your hard work. Many wonderful activities and learning opportunities were planned which helped everyone to enjoy their academic experience. We are holding elections this week for those who want to be members of the BSO leadership. This year there are 6 candidates who are all well qualified. Elections run from now until Tuesday August 29 th at Noon. The steps to voting are the following:

1) Review the profiles for the 6 candidates (BSO Leadership Candidates for 2006.doc)

2) Decide who you believe would be the best PRESIDENT. Vote for 1 person only and the other candidates will fill out the rest of the positions for the BSO leadership.

3) Log into the email account on yahoo http://mail.yahoo.com/ using Log in name: biostat_iowa, password: biostats

4) Send an email from the yahoo account to Dr. Jeff Dawson at jeffrey-dawson@uiowa.edu and simply include the name of the 1 individual who you would like to vote for as president along with the random number that you will receive from Ann. Ann will send a random number to each of you shortly after receiving this message so that the voting will be anonymous and that only 1 vote from each person will be allowed.

5) After you send the name of the person you are voting in as President and random number to Dr. Dawson, delete the email that you just sent from the sent items folder.

08/14/2006 Call for BSO volunteers

We hope everyone is ready for another exciting year at the University of Iowa, Department of Biostatistics.

For those of you who are new, we have a departmental student organization called the Biostatistics Student Organization (BSO). All students in the department are automatically members of the BSO. The BSO is led by a group of student volunteers within the department. Their responsibilities include planning activities, organizing study sessions, developing student and faculty relationships, and helping to ensure that our academic experience at the University of Iowa is a success.

As the academic year begins, the BSO is looking for student volunteers who would be willing to contribute their time and talents to the BSO. The time commitment is minimal (couple hours per month), but your help would be greatly appreciated. For those who are interested in helping out with the leadership of the BSO, please fill out the application form and return to JonDavid Sparks (jondavid-sparks@uiowa.edu). If you have already filled one out, no need to send another. Please email if you have any questions or questions could also be answered at orientation this Thursday. Please send your volunteer application sheet by 10am on Monday, August 21 st.
