CBH Student Association

The Community and Behavioral Health Student Association was established to provide opportunities for professional development, service oriented outreach and social events for students. CBHSA aims to create unity among all students in the Department of Community and Behavioral Health by serving as a means of communication between students, faculty, the College of Public Health, and the community.

Aims and Functions

  • Develop a sense of community among all students and staff in the Department of Community and Behavioral Health
  • Expand opportunities for student professional development
  • Facilitate student dialogue with local, state, and national organizations

Membership

Membership is open to all students studying Community and Behavioral Health. Contact an officer for more information. Meetings are held once a month.

2012-2013 Officers

Mamie Carlson - President

Mamie Carlson is originally from Muscatine, IA. She has an MPH in Health Behavior and Health Education from the University of Michigan where she was trained in community-based participatory research. Mamie is currently a second-year PhD student in Community and Behavioral Health and an Institute for Clinical and Translational Science TL1 trainee. Her primary areas of interest are social determinants of health and reducing health disparities through community engagement and translational research. Contact

Elizabeth Swanton - Vice President

Liz Swanton grew up on the south side of Chicago. She graduated from Grinnell College in 2007 with a BA in History. Her interests include the promotion of healthy eating and physical activity, community-based behavioral interventions, and health communication.

Meagan Schorr - Service Committee Co-Chair

Meagan completed her undergrad at Illinois State University with a BS in Community Health Education and Psychology. She is currently a second-year MPH student with interests in community based-participatory research, HIV risk reduction, sexual health, health disparities, and community engagement.

Carolyn Sleeth - Service Committee Co-Chair

Carolyn Sleeth is originally from Madison, Wis. She graduated in 2012 from the University of Iowa with a BS in Biology and a minor in Spanish. She is interested in maternal and child health and health disparities, especially among the Spanish-speaking population.

Marcus Barlow- Social Committee Co-Chair

Marcus Barlow is originally from Schaller, IA. He graduated from Luther College in 2011 with a B.A. in Biology and Africana Studies. Marcus can be found spending his summers and winters in Lake Okoboji and Winter Park, CO searching for extreme sports. Marcus will be starting his first year of the MPH in CBH and his interests lie in international and reproductive health, along with disparities.

Emily Berg - Social Committee Chair

Emily Berg lives in Coralville, was born in New Jersey, and went to high school in Minnesota. She graduated last spring (2012) from Lehigh University with degrees from sociology and anthropology. She’s interested in international health and also community outreach.

Melissa Fox- Professional Development Committee Co-Chair

Melissa Fox is originally from Des Moines. After graduating with a BA in Biology in 2007 from Wartburg, she served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Mozambique from 2007 to 2009. As a volunteer, she collaborated with a local HIV/AIDS association to support on-going education and prevention activities and to implement an income-generating project. After returning to the Des Moines area in 2009, Melissa worked as a Research Associate at Pioneer. Melissa is currently a first year MPH student in CBH and is interested in applying community-based participatory research to address the prevention of chronic diseases and health disparities affecting the Latino population in the United States. She is also interested in working in the area of global health.

Rachel Nash - Public Relations Liaison

Rachel Nash is originally from West Chicago, IL. She graduated in 2012 from the University of Iowa with a BS in Integrative Physiology and a minor in Psychology. Rachel is currently a MPH student in Community and Behavioral Health and is interested in maternal and child health,
childhood nutrition, preventative medicine, and international health. She works as a graduate research assistant in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery focusing on scoliosis. Rachel takes a special interest in clubfoot treatment and awareness, spending her summers as an intern for the Ponseti International Association.

Laura Schwab-Reese - Journal Club Co-Chair

Laura Schwab-Reese is originally from Okeechobee, FL.  She has a B.S. in Psychology and a M.A. in Community and Rehabilitation Counseling.  She is currently a second-year PhD student in Community and Behavioral Health and an Occupational Injury Prevention Fellow.  Her dissertation will focus on intimate partner violence during pregnancy and the postpartum period. Rachel Cahoon - Journal Club Co-Chair

Rachel Cahoon grew up in rural Allamakee County, IA. She graduated from Grinnell College in 2010 with a BA in Psychology, and spent a year post-grad as an Americorps VISTA with the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services. Rachel is currently a second-year MPH student, and her interests include the intersection of health and social justice, community-based participatory research, sustainable agriculture. Contact

Kaitlin Herring - Student Liaison

Kaitlin Herring is originally from Cedar Rapids, IA. She graduated in 2009 from Luther College in Decorah IA with a BA in Sociology and minors in Psychology and Women/Gender Studies. She is currently a second-year MPH student in Community and Behavioral Health. Kaitlin is interested in worksite wellness, fitness/nutrition promotion, obesity reduction, community outreach and health literacy. Contact
