Resources at the University of Iowa

The  Division of Sponsored Programs provides graduate and professional students with expert assistance in seeking external funding to support research, dissertation, travel, and other scholarly activities.

The Graduate College offers information on internal funding opportunities for graduate and professional students.

Then Graduate Student Senate allocates funds from the Graduate College to graduate student applicants for the purpose of presenting their work at meetings, symposia, conferences, or other professional or academic gatherings.

Scholarships

Award for Student Excellence in Public Health Practice
For masters and/or doctoral students enrolled in one of the 34 CEPH-accredited schools of public health. This Award for Student Excellence in Public Health Practice is $1,000 and recognizes and rewards student comprehension, application, and growth regarding public health practice.  Application deadline is usually mid-winter.

Braverman Scholarship
Scholarship available through the UI Foundation and Student Disability Services.  For graduate or professional students with disabilities.  Contact Student Disability Services at 319/335-1462.  Usually an April application deadline.

Eagle's Flight Inc. Education Scholarship
$250 scholarship for full-time students who are members of an underrepresented ethnic minority group, who are in an undergraduate or graduate degree program in a bioscience or health science-related field. Contact eagleinc@soli.inav.net for application.

Tylenol Scholarship
Makers of Tylenol will be awarding a total of $250,000 in scholarship money to outstanding students who are pursuing health-related studies in 2009.  Visit their website at www.tylenol.com/scholarship for applications and information.  Deadline: May 15, 2008

 

Internships and Training Programs

Association of Teachers of Preventive Medicine (ATPM)

12-24 week internship for currently enrolled students in a graduate program.  Provides an opportunity for graduate students of public health and related discplines to gain hands-on experience and work with leading experts in the field pof public health.  Application deadline in early January.

The Wellstone Fellowship for Social Justice

One year fellowship.  Runs from August to July.  Not currently taking applications.  Fellows will be paid an annual stipend (mid-$30's) and will receive excellent healthcare benefits.  Candidates seeking consideration for the Wellstone Fellowship must display the potential to contribute to social justice work following their year of hands-on experience as a fellow.

Public Health Graduate Student Internship Program
12 to 24 week internship for currently enrolled students in a graduate program. Provides an opportunity for graduate students of public health and related disciplines to gain hands-on experience and work with leading experts in the field of public health. Application deadline in early January.

ASPH/CDC/ATSDR Internship Program
12-week summer program for current enrolled public health students. Located in Atlanta or other CDC geographical location. Students receive stipend of $5,000. Application deadline mid-January.

Iowa Department of Public Health Internships
A variety of internships are available in the summer and throughout the year. Many positions are paid.

Maternal and Child Health Bureau Graduate Student Internship Program
12-week summer internship. Interns will receive a stipend of $5,000 to be disbursed over three months to cover travel to the internship site, housing, and daily living expenses. Should be currently enrolled as public health graduate student. Must be U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Application deadline mid-February.

ASPH/CDC/ATSDR Fellowship in Public Health
One-two year, full-time position in Atlanta or other CDC geographical location. Usually begins in September. For recent masters or doctoral graduates of ASPH accredited schools of public health. Application deadline mid-November.

CDC Prevention Specialist Service and Training Program
Three year, full-time position. First year spent at CDC in Atlanta, second two years at health department in U.S.A. For graduates of public health master's programs who have 1-2 years of public health related work experience. Application deadline mid-January.

ATPM Preventive Medicine & Public Health Fellowship Program
One to two year, post-graduate, stipend-supported fellowship opportunities in public health and preventive medicine interest areas. Opportunities for both doctoral and masters graduates.

Presidential Management Intern Program
2-year management and training program for recent graduates of masters or doctoral degree programs. Positions available at CDC and other federal public health agencies.

CDC Health Communication Internship/Fellowship Program
This program is for non-CDC employees only. It is a great way to bring talented people to the agency to help with CDC communication projects. We welcome applications for the Health Communication Intern/Fellow Program. The relevant fields of education would include, but are not limited to, communication, journalism, health education, anthropology, marketing, and Information Technology/Human Computer Interaction.

To be considered for the Health Communication Intern/Fellow Program please submit a resume to Belinda Ware bkw0@cdc.gov stating date of availability. Positions are available year round.

The National Cancer Institute
If offering paid six-month internships in health communications and science writing to students who are completing their master's or doctoral degrees. These internships provide students with an opportunity to take part in vital health communications projects .  Application deadline is mid-March for the July-December term and mid-September for the January-June term.

 

Research Funding

American Cancer Society Student Stipend
Award to permit a student in the University of Iowa medical, dental, and health professional degree programs, or to a student in the professional health sciences, to pursue a cancer related research project.  Applications usually due in May.

Meatless Monday Health Communications Scholars
Awards of $5,000 are available for up to 10 graduate students enrolled in accredited schools of public health. The purpose of this program is to encourage the development of innovative, research-based strategies to increase awareness of and participation in the campaign. Applications are usually due in March. Funding for Doctoral Studies

University of Iowa Summer Graduate Fellowships
Fellowship will provide students in doctoral programs, enrolled in a minimum of one course during the 6 week or 8 week summer sessions (enrollment in the 3 week summer session does not qualify), a $3,000 summer stipend plus tuition and standard fees, as listed in the Schedule of Courses. This fellowship cannot be used in combination with any other source of summer support.  Priority is given to students who have completed their comprehensive exams.

ASPH/CDC/PRC Minority Pre-Doctoral Fellowships
2 year doctoral fellowships for minority students, within CDC-funded Prevention Research Centers.

ASPH/CDC/PRC Minority Fellowship Program- Cancer Track

2 year doctoral fellowships related to cancer.  For minority students within CDC-funded Prevention Research Centers.

Ford Pre-Doctoral and Dissertation Fellowships for Minorities
Pre-Doctoral and dissertation funding for under-represented minority students beginning PhD programs in several areas, one of which is behavioral science.

NIH Pre-Doctoral Fellowship Awards for Students with Disabilities
For students with disabilities who are enrolled or have been accepted to a Ph.D. program in the biomedical, behavioral, or clinical sciences. Will provide up to five years of support for research training leading to the Ph.D.

NIH Pre-Doctoral Fellowship Awards for Minority Students
For under represented minority students who are enrolled or have been accepted to a Ph.D. program in the biomedical, behavioral, or clinical sciences. Will provide up to five years of support for research training leading to the Ph.D.

Lung Health Research Dissertation Grant
American Lung Association 1-2 years funding to support doctoral research training for dissertation research on issues relevant to lung disease.

National Research Service Awards for Individual Pre-Doctoral Fellows
Must be enrolled in a program leading to a research doctorate in biomedical or behavioral research training. This program will provide predoctoral training support for doctoral candidates that have successfully completed their comprehensive examinations or the equivalent by the time of award and will be performing dissertation research and training. Provides tuition and living stipend for two-three years.

Woodrow Wilson-Johnson & Johnson Dissertation Grants in Women's Health
Grants of $5,000 to be used for expenses connected with the dissertation.


Postdoctoral Training

W. K. Kellog Foundation Scholars in Health Disparities
Postdoctoral fellowship, challenges investigators from a variety of disciplines, including economics, sociology, public health and law to examine the causes and consider policy solutions for health disparities by race, ethnicity, gender and income/socioeconomic status.

Postdoctoral Training in Population-Based Cancer Prevention and Control Research
Cancer Research Center of Hawaii, Two-year program. Stipends from $45,000-$70,000. Application deadline is in April.

Postdoctoral Training in Complementary/Alternative Medicine
Three year program. Stipends from $18,600 to $32,300 depending on number of years of relevant postdoctoral experience.

Postdoctoral Training with the Epidemic Intelligence Service, CDC
Two-year, post-graduate program of service and on-the-job training for health professionals interested in the practice of epidemiology.

Postdoctoral Research Training Fellowship Awards, American Lung Association
One-two years support for the training of scientific investigators in the fields of adult and pediatric pulmonary medicine and lung biology. Preference is given to applicants who demonstrate a program of training that will enable them to pursue an academic career.

 

Fulbright Grants

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, the Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers opportunities for recent graduates, postgraduate candidates, and developing professionals and artists to conduct career-launching study and research abroad.
