Prospective Students

Admissions Requirements


The department bases admissions decisions on:

  1. An applicant's academic potential as demonstrated through grade point average, test scores and academic and personal references
  2. An applicant's motivation and interest in an area of community and behavioral health as demonstrated by prior experience and the statement of purpose. In addition, Ph.D. admissions decisions are strongly affected by an applicant's fit with the research interests of the Community and Behavioral Health faculty.

Master of Science in Community and Behavioral Health

  • Minimum grade-point-average of 3.0
  • GRE general test scores, less than 5 years old. Preference will be given to applicants who achieve at least a verbal score of 154 and quantitative score of 148.
  • Students whose native language is not English must score at least 600 paper-based, 250 computer-based, or 100 Internet-based on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL); or 7.0 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with no subscore lower than 6.0.
  • A background in social science is recommended.

Master of Public Health - Subtrack in Community and Behavioral Health

Refer to the M.P.H. web site for information on M.P.H. application processes.  Note that the CBH department does not accept M.P.H. applications for the spring semester. 

Ph.D. in Community and Behavioral Health

  • Minimum graduate grade-point-average of 3.4
  • GRE general test scores, less than 5 years old. Preference will be given to applicants who achieve at least a verbal score of 154 (540 on the old GRE scale) and a quantitative score of 149 (610 on the old scale).
  • Students whose native language is not English must score at least 600 paper-based, 250 computer-based, or 100 Internet-based on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL); or 7.0 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with no subscore lower than 6.0.
  • A prior master’s degree in a related field is required.


The CBH department is currently not accepting applications for the Ph.D. subtrack in Addiction Studies.
