Admissions Application Process

Admissions Requirements

The Department bases admissions decisions on:

  1. An applicant's academic potential as demonstrated through grade point average, test scores and academic and personal references
  2. An applicant's motivation and interest in an area of community and behavioral health as demonstrated by prior experience and the statement of purpose. In addition, PhD admissions decisions are strongly affected by an applicant's fit with the research interests of the Community and Behavioral Health faculty.

Master of Science in Community and Behavior Health

  • Minimum grade-point-average of 3.0
  • GRE General Test scores, less than 5 years old. Preference will be given to applicants who achieve at least a verbal score of 520 and quantitative score of 600.
  • Students whose native language is not English must score at least 600 paper-based, 250 computer-based, or 100 Internet-based on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL); or 7.0 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with no subscore lower than 6.0.
  • A background in social science is recommended.

Master of Public Health subtrack in Community and Behavioral Health

PhD in Community and Behavioral Health

  • Minimum graduate grade-point-average of 3.4
  • GRE General Test scores, less than 5 years old. Preference will be given to applicants who achieve at least a verbal score of 520 and a quantitative score of 620.
  • Students whose native language is not English must score at least 600 paper-based, 250 computer-based, or 100 Internet-based on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL); or 7.0 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with no subscore lower than 6.0.
  • A prior master’s degree in a related field is required.

PhD subtrack in Addiction Studies

Requirements for admission to the PhD subtrack in Addiction Studies are the same as those for the general PhD in Community and Behavioral Health. In addition, applicants should show evidence of strong motivation and interest in addiction issues, demonstrated by prior experience and the Statement of Purpose.
