Dr. Mary Wilson is the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine Professor of Global Health. She is a Professor of Internal Medicine- Infectious Diseases, Microbiology & Immunology, and Epidemiology at the University of Iowa. She is a member of the Graduate Programs in Immunology, Molecular Medicine and Genetics.
Dr. Wilson is an Honorary Professor at the Federal University of Rio Grade do Norte, Brazil and an Honorary Professor at the University of Cape Coast, Ghana, and a Fellow of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene
Education:
- Wilson received her M.D. from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. She did her residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan, and fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the University of Virginia. She received her certificate in Tropical Medicine from the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in.
Research:
- Her research addresses the immune and molecular biology of the pathogenic Leishmania species protozoa. Her studies approach the disease through both laboratory and field-based studies in endemic countries. Goals are to determine the host and parasite factors leading to chronic symptomatic infection in humans and in animal models.
Distinctions:
- She is recipient of a Fulbright Foundation Senior Scholar Award for work at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte in Natal, Brazil
- She received the Bailey K. Ashford Medal for excellence in Tropical Medicine Research, American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.
- She was awarded the Kate Daum Research Professorship, the Regents Award for Faculty Excellence and is a Helen Johnson Scholar in Bioinformatics.
- Wilson was awarded the Distinguished Mentor Award from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine
