The University of Iowa CERT grant supported 13 different projects covering a wide
range of topics and disciplines, in addition to funding core investigators that have
helped with many other projects related to medications in older adults. Some of the
topics covered in our original 13 projects include:

  • Methodology for Comparative Effectiveness Research
A series of papers testing methods for comparing treatment effects in real
    world patients. (1,2,3,4,5,6)
  • Age Disparities in Cancer Outcomes
In non-small-cell lung cancer, the elderly were less likely to receive
platinum-based therapies and experienced more adverse events during
    therapy, independent of comorbidity. (7)
  • Tools and Programs for Improving Prescribing Quality
Multicenter pharmacist-physician collaborative hypertension management improved blood pressure control (8,9); decision aid tool improved pharmacists’ ability to identify drug therapy problems (10)
  • Targeting Algorithms for Medicare Part D Medication Therapy Management
Familiar prescribing quality measures used by many health systems do predict risk of medication side effects but are insufficient for targeting medication therapy management interventions. (11,12)
  • Medicare Part D Beneficiary Prescription Drug Use Behaviors
Medication use decreased with increasing copayment among lower income beneficiaries. Medicare D enrollees had worse health status and more prescription drug use than non-enrollees. (13,14)
