Intermediate Term Training

Intermediate-term training consists of a one-semester (five-month) training period at The University of Iowa for five trainees annually. An international committee reviews, interviews, and selects trainees from among applicants in the participating countries ¯ usually coming from the participating institutions. Selected trainees have been identified as potential or current leaders in their disciplines and institutions.

Once chosen, each trainee’s home institution makes a commitment to retain and support him or her during their absence and to provide round-trip airfare to the U.S. Trainees arrive several weeks before the fall semester (trainees from The Gambia come in the spring semester) in order to participate in orientation activities, seminars and workshops. Trainees enroll for a minimum of three courses (nine graduate credit hours) during the semester as a special student at The University of Iowa. Courses usually taken include epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health, environmental toxicology, occupational health, occupational ergonomics, agricultural medicine, introduction to health care systems, and others.
