Short Term Training
Each year a number of researchers participate in short-term training at The University of Iowa for periods of four-to-six weeks. The two sources of participants in this program are former intermediate-term trainees making a return visit to Iowa and new short-term trainees. Former trainees are supported to return to Iowa to accomplish specific objectives related to their previous training. Examples of these objectives are to complete a manuscript for publication of previous work, to write a new or expanded proposal based on results of a pilot project, to analyze data that has been collected in their home country, or to plan a future workshop or conference with their faculty mentor. New short-term trainees may also benefit from a short, focused visit that does not include formal coursework in order to help promote an in-country research agenda or develop institutional capacity for research.
Short-term trainees are identified during the annual recruitment and selection process that is used to identify intermediate-term trainees.

- Gordana Pantelic, Institute of Occupational and Radiological Health, Department of Radiological Health, Belgrade, Serbia. Gordana was interested in radiological research.
- Zuzana Dzundova, Slovak Medical University, Slovakia.
2005:
- Karol Hatiar, PhD. A former intermediate term trainee from 1996, Karol returned to Iowa to work on a research project with Dr. Tom Cook.
2004:
- Jarmila Korcova, PhD, Department of Healthcare and Social Work, Trnava University, Trnava, Slovakia. Jarmila met with faculty and staff who are involved in program administration in the CPH to learn about course development in epidemiology and social health issues, to discuss collaborative projects, and to attend the APHA meeting.
- Alina Buczynska, PhD, Departmemt of Aerosols and Biological Hazards, Nofer Institute of Occupational Medicine, Lodz, Poland. Alina spent three weeks in Dr. Peter Thorne's Inhalation and Toxicology Laboratory learning methods in the assessment of endotoxins and b-glucans in indoor and outdoor environments.
2003:
- Magdalena Belanova, RN, PhD (new trainee) spent four weeks attending bi-weekly sessions of the Occupational Health Nursing class, observing health services at a number of industrial work sites, and consulting with Nursing and Public Health faculty members.
2002:
- Anna Kriskova, PhD (former intermediate-term trainee, 1998) spent six weeks in Iowa compiling occupational health nursing materials that are being translated into Slovak for a text book.
- Urska Koren, MS (former intermediate-term trainee, 2001) spent six weeks continuing work with her mentor on LIDAR methods in air pollution patterns.
- Irena Szadkowska-Stanczyk, MD, PhD, (new trainee) spent three weeks in the Inhalation Toxicology Facility in the Department of Occupational and Environmental Health learning sampling methods and use of specific equipment applied to various kinds of research projects that will assist her as newly appointed Head of the Aerosols and Microclimate Laboratory in Lodz, Poland.
2001:
- Jana Blahova, PhD (former intermediate-term trainee, 1997) came to Iowa for one month. She worked with her former mentor, Dr. Michael Pfaller to expand her skills in the area of antimicrobial resistance surveillance in order to participate in an ongoing SENTRY Antimicrobioal Surveillance Program and to expand it after returning to Slovkia.
- Vlasta Hladikova, MSc, PhD Candidate (former intermediate-term trainee, 1996). The purpose of her visit was to collaborate, as co-investigator of a funded research project entitled Occurrence of Copper and Zinc in Ambient Air of Selected Locations in the Slovak Republic, with Professor Jerry Schnoor in evaluating collected data for an impact assessment, and to collect and evaluate existing data from other countries from databases available at Iowa; and to prepare the final report.
- Iveta Carikova, MSc (new trainee). Ms. Carikova worked on a literature review for the theoretical part of her PhD thesis entitled Intake of Essential Elements from the Food Chain into the Human Organism from databases available at the University of Iowa Libraries. She also worked with Ms. Hladikova and Professor Schnoor as a research assistant on the project Occurrence of Copper and Zinc in Ambient Air of Selected Locations in the Slovak Republic.
- Sonia Ftacnikova, PhD (former trainee, 1996). The purpose of her visit was to continue her collaboration with Dr. Erling Anderson, associate professor in the Program in Biomedical Ethics and Medical Humanities, on ethical issues in research.
- Jozef Balaz, BS (new trainee). The purpose of Mr. Balaz’ visit was to begin collaborative research on factory worker ergonomic issues with Dr. Thomas Cook, and to consult on the technical feasibility of future video-conferencing for educational programs.

1999:
- Gabriel Gulis, PhD (former trainee, 1996). The purpose of the visit was:
- to participate as a presenter in a conference entitled Slovak History and Culture, sponsored by the National Czech and Slovak Museum. Dr. Gulis’ talk was on the current state of environmental health in Slovakia;
- to spend one week consulting with University of Iowa faculty on the topics of tobacco and smoking cessation, comparative epidemiological analysis and cost-control studies related to health promotion activities;
- to attend the annual American Public Health Association meeting.
1998:
- Jana Tulinska, MD, PhD (former trainee, 1996). The purpose of the visit was to analyze data and begin writing a paper for publication with Dr. Lar Fuortes on their joint research project Biomonitoring of Occupational Exposure to Styrene in a Slovak Plastics Lamination Plant.
