International Internship Program Award for Graduate Students

These internships may be designed to meet the requirements of the following programs:

  • the Practicum for MPH students on a the global health track
  • the foreign research or study experience for the Global Health Studies Certificate Program

Institute of Preventive and Clinical Medicine - Slovak Medical University (IPCM-SMU): Located in Bratislava. The mission of the IPCM-SMU is focused on environmentally related diseases, promotion of health and quality of life by means of prevention, control and therapy

Finland

Finnish Institute of Occupational Health (FIOH). FIOH (in Helskinki) is a research and advisory institute whose main tasks are research, training of occupational health and safety professionals, provision of advisory services, and dissemination of information and Farmers Social Insurance Institute MELA, (in Kuopio) is a public-private institution which administers a broad range of programs for the farming population in Finland. Among MELA's programs are earnings related pension, farm closure system, employment accident insurance, holiday and stand-in system, and occupational health and safety promotion through education and research.

Poland

The Nofer Institute of Occupational Health is a complex research and development center with activities covering various areas of occupational and environmental health At least seven main disciplines of research and problem-oriented activities can be distinguished.

Romania

The Institute of Public Health, located in Cluj-Napoca
The activity of this Institute is primarily focused to field-oriented preventive medicine; strongly related to the existing main public health problems in Transylvania and in Romania as well. Highly qualified technical assistance is provided to all the Inspectorates of Public Health from the 10 districts of Transylvania. Research activities in the field of Preventive Medicine are also performed, contributing by their results to the surveillance and control of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the population.

Other Sites Other opportunities for well-organized international intern-ships may be used in applying for funding. Please check with CIREH before applying.  

Program Dates

Length of program will vary among sites, but will be between four and six weeks in length, and will be planned to occur between the last two weeks in May and mid-July.

Elements of the Internship Program

  • Pre-departure orientation meetings with provision of materials on assigned institution;
  • Four to six week internship at assigned institution;
  • On-site orientation will consist of visits and introductions to local institutions, such as universities, research laboratories and field sites, ministries of health and environment and others depending on interests;
  • Optional opportunity to earn 3 semester hours of U of I academic credit as Independent Study, Preceptorship, or Practicum

Funding

CIREH will offer partial funding assistance ($500-$1500) based on the application process.  We will also try to help students t identify other potential funding sources.

Eligibility

To be eligible, applicants must be full-time students, registered in a graduate or professional program, and demonstrate the appropriate level of knowledge or experience for the particular internship assignment. Graduating students are eligible.

    • Internship site you are interested in
    • Sponsor (person/dept coordinating the internship)
    • Personal Statement: include educational/career goals, reasons for desiring an internship experience, and specific areas or topics of interest (2-3 pages in length)
    • Financial need for this internship experience
    • Other sources of funding you anticipate (if applicable)
  • Transcript from U of I (should be sent directly from Registrar’s Office to CIREH)
  • Letter of recommendation that will demonstrate applicant’s academic abilities and capacity to adapt to foreign cultural differences.

Selection Criteria

Students will be selected to participate in the intern program based on the following criteria:

  • Sufficient knowledge of appropriate discipline to be able to take advantage of a professional setting;
  • Demonstrated interest in an international experience to further educational and career goals;
  • Letters of recommendation providing direct knowledge of student’s likelihood to perform well under the circumstances of an international internship;
  • Academic excellence.
