Purpose of Research Fellowship
Research funding should enable students to gain international and research
experience in a health related area. Projects should enhance or serve
to develop a professional interest in global health and provide a perspective
from which to guide further study and work.

Mission and Philosophy
The Center for International Rural and Environmental Health fosters
interdisciplinary research into the causes, consequences and prevention
of communicable, chronic, environmental, and occupational diseases in
all regions of the globe, focusing on nations with substantial agrarian
economies.

Eligibility
- Students must be enrolled in a full-time degree program or certificate
program at The University of Iowa.
- Post-doctoral fellows are not eligible.

Research Projects
- Projects that help develop M.S. or Ph.D. research will be viewed
with added favor.
- Research projects must relate to a specific population of the country
to be visited.
- A project may be coordinated with a University of Iowa Office of
Study Abroad or other institutional program.
- Completed projects fulfill the Global Health Studies foreign experience
requirement.

Terms of the Award
- Sponsorship: Applicants must work with a University
of Iowa faculty advisor, and projects must meet their approval.
- Duration: Each CIREH scholarship must be spent
within one year of receiving the award letter, unless the recipient
requests and receives written approval for extension.
- Allowable Expenses:
- Round trip air fares
- Tuition and fees in health-related study abroad program
- Meals and housing costs during travel
- Research expenses (materials, translation, copy costs, etc.)
- Immunization expenses

Obligations to CIREH
.
- During the year following project completion, students must participate
in a seminar to present their research results as a means of sharing
information and experiences.
- Students are asked to submit a final written project report with
the inclusion of 3 - 5 captioned slides or color photos (if possible)
illustrating the research experience.

Evaluation Criteria
Applications will be evaluated by CIREH and Global Health Studies Program
committee members and awards will be made based on how well they meet
the following criteria:
- Proposal topic must be appropriate to CIREH interests of rural and
environmental health in developing or newly democratized countries
- Research/study project should be clearly identified and appropriate
to student's academic level
- Proposal should demonstrate background knowledge of the research
question (some references should be included) and technical skills
for acquiring, processing and interpreting information gathered while
conducting research
- Letter of recommendation should provide direct knowledge of student's
likelihood to perform well under circumstances of proposed project
- Proposal should show that the research/study project fits into student's
academic and/or career plans

- AMOUNT OF FUNDING REQUESTED
- Letter of recommendation from faculty sponsor or supervisor who
has read the research proposal and agrees to guide student's project
during the period abroad
- Transcript from U of I (or other institution if you are a recent
transfer student) It should be sent directly from Registrar's Office
to CIREH.
- Statement from host institution (or appropriate in-country officials)
indicating their knowledge of and agreement to work with and provide
resources for proposed study. For students proposing foreign study
include a copy of the institutional brochure or a syllabus of course
of study.
- Research Proposal—4-6 (double-spaced) page statement including:
- Description of project and relevance to your educational/career
goals
- project goals and expected benefits
- Methods of research
- Itemized budget (transportation, living expenses, supplies,
fees, immunization
- Timetable of research and travel
- Demonstration of intent to get approval from the Human
Subjects Review Committee.
