About the Center

Research in the CPHS includes collaborative projects from a variety of funding sources and over a broad array of public health concerns.  Examples of these projects and their funding sources include the Iowa WISEWOMAN Project (cardiovascular risk factor screening study funded by the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC)), the Iowa Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (IDPH and CDC), the Economic Special Studies Center for the United States Renal Data System (NIH-NIDDK), the GIS Workbench Project (spatial patterns of cancer burden funded by NIH-NCI), and the Smart Start Project (intervention study to youth with disabilities succeed in school and employment funded by the Iowa Department of Human Services and Social Security Administration).  The members of the CPHS continue to integrate these research activities with conduct of research on methodology in public health statistics including such areas as survey sampling, spatial statistics, small area estimation, and longitudinal data methods.

The CPHS continues to develop liaisons with resources that provide access to important public health databases such as those available from the National Center for Health Statistics and the IDPH, as well as administrative data from private health insurers.  The Director of the Center (Dr. Pendergast) is currently in the final stages of negotiating a contract with Wellmark Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Iowa and South Dakota to maintain a research health insurance claims database for (restricted) use within the University.  This database is a rich longitudinal database of claims records for those whose risk is underwritten by the Wellmark Blue Cross/Blue Shield corporation in the entire state of Iowa, with yearly updates.

If you have any questions regarding what CPHS does, please do not hesitate to contact the center.   CPHS is located in the south end of the Westlawn building on the University of Iowa campus.
