About the Center

History

The CPHS was established in March 1999 under the strategic plan for the University of Iowa College of Public Health. Administratively designated as part of the Department of Biostatistics, the CPHS functions collaboratively with collegiate departments and centers, University groups, and outside entities in fulfillment of its mission.

The initial project of the CPHS was to produce the 1999 Iowa Health Fact Book. This was a highly cooperative effort, benefiting from expertise and resources of many different groups within the college, Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), and other entities.  The Fact Book has since been produced in 2001, 2003 and 2005.

With the appointment of the Director in August 1999, the focus of the Center has been on defining goals and objectives, developing collaborative relationships in the area of public health statistics, representing the college to the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) with respect to issues involving public health data, engaging in cooperative educational endeavors with the IDPH, engaging in several funded projects, and exploring further funding opportunities.
