James A. Roth, D.V.M., Ph.D.

Dr. James A. Roth is a Collaborating Professor in the Department of Epidemiology in the College of Public Health at the University of Iowa, and a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Preventive Medicine in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University. He received the DVM and a PhD in immunology from Iowa State University. He is the Director of the Center for Food Security and Public Health established in 2002 at ISU, which is designated by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as a “Center for public health preparedness in veterinary medicine and zoonotic diseases.” Dr. Roth has served as the Executive Director of the Institute for International Cooperation in Animal Biologics (IICAB) since its establishment in 1995. The IICAB is a collaborative effort between ISU and the USDA Centers for Animal Health in Ames, and has been designated by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) as a Collaborating Center for the Diagnosis of Animal Disease and Vaccine Evaluation in the Americas. Dr. Roth was appointed by the Secretary of Health and Human Services to serve on the National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity (2005 to 2008). Dr. Roth’s research interests are in evaluation of cell-mediated immunity to bovine and porcine infectious agents and vaccines. He also has a project to develop a recombinant vaccine for the Nipah virus.
