Dr. Blair serves as the Director of Viral Diseases Program at the Navy Medical Research Unit #2 in Jakarta , Indonesia where he leads a team of US Navy and civilian clinicians, technicians and administrators. Research projects currently focus on immunopathogenic and epidemiological studies of dengue, chikungunya and Hantaviruses. From 2002-2004 he was the Deputy Directory of the Virology Department at the Naval Medical Research Center Detachment, Lima Peru . Following initial training in immunology at Vanderbilt University , Dr. Blair received a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences with a specialty in Immunology from Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 1994. He was commissioned in the US Navy in June 1994 and performed a post-doctorial fellowship with Dr. Carl H. June at the Naval Medical Research Institute in Bethesda, Maryland from 1994-1997. In 1997, Dr. Blair was appointed as the Deputy Director of the Immune Cell Biology Program where his research focused on gaining a better understanding of T cell co-stimulator molecules. In 1999, he was appointed the Director of the T cell Laboratory within the NIDDK-Navy Transplantation and Autoimmunity Branch at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda Maryland . During that time, his work focused on the immunopathogenesis of autoimmune diseases, and the role of T cells following transplantation of either skin or solid organs. Dr. Blair is an Assistant Professor of Immunology at the Uniformed Services University in Bethesda Maryland , a reviewer for a number of international biomedical journals and a member of the US Naval Institute, the American Association of Immunologists, the International Cytokine Society and the American Society of Tropical Medicine. Dr. Blair has published over fifty scientific manuscripts and book chapters. LCDR Blair's military awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, two Navy Commendation Medals, two Navy Achievement Medals and the Navy Unit Commendation Medal. Dr. Blair and his wife Tracy Renee currently reside in Jakarta with their three children.
