Summary Case Report: Victim
was a 75 -year-old farmer working alone loading manure with an
older narrow-front tractor equipped with a front-end loader. Working
in a sloped barn yard, he was moving in a reverse turn with the
bucket raised, and full of manure. The tractor was tipped to the
side and to the front, increasing its instability even further,
and it probably tipped over when he applied the brakes during
his turn. It rolled completely over crushing and killing the victim.

Summary Case Report: A
39-year-old farmer and vocational agricultural instructor was
loading hay onto wagon on a side hill. The wagon was unattached
to the tractor. It started to roll backwards. Farmer downhill
from the wagon raised front-end loader of tractor to stop rolling.
Wagon kept coming and overturned the tractor killing him instantly.
The victim's 11-year-old son, riding with his father, was thrown
off and crushed his arm; his13-year-old son was an eyewitness
and ran for help.

Summary Case Report: A
74-year-old retired farmer was driving an older narrow-front tractor
pulling a small utility wagon. His wife was working with him.
He was crossing a homemade wooden bridge when his wife heard something
crack. She turned to look at the bridge, and it collapsed. The
tractor landed upside down, killing the farmer instantly. The
bridge was made of telephone- type poles with cross planking.
It spanned 30 feet and had a depth of 15 ft.

Summary Case Report: A
75-year-old farmer working alone was cutting willow brush along
a creek with his older tractor and rotary mower. He got too close
to the creek bank and the rear wheel dropped off the edge causing
the tractor to roll down a 5 ft. Grass-covered embankment which
had a 70 degree slope. No ROPS were present on the tractor. He
was killed instantly from blunt chest and abdominal trauma. He
was found hours later by his wife

Summary Case Report: A
73-year-old farmer was driving an older tricycle type tractor
straight up a steep hill, something he had done many times before.
This day the ground was slippery and he slid back down a few times.
On last attempt he slid back and the right rear wheel rode up
on a bush turning the tractor to the left. It rolled completely
over with front crushing chest of victim. Tractor had no ROPS.
The tractor did have liquid filled tires.

Summary Case Report: A
50-year-old male farmer was filling in dirt along a creek bank
using a skid-steer loader. The loader got too close to the edge
and rolled completely over landing upright in the creek bed. The
farmer remained partially in the loader seat but received massive
head injuries when the loader overturned. The protective top of
the machine had been removed by the victim to accommodate short
ceilings in hog buildings were the machine was used.

Summary Case Report: A
67-year-old man was helping his son-in-law do farm chores. He
was driving an older tricycle-type tractor with bale hooks on
the rear. He was on the right side of a highway waiting to turn
left into a farm driveway. During his turn a car crested a hill
and slammed on brakes to avoid the tractor. The victim was distracted
and over-steered causing the tractor to miss the farm lane. He
entered a ditch to the left of the lane, overturning the tractor.
The tractor was not equipped with ROPS.

A 66-year-old farmer was using a tractor mowing a ditch along
a highway using a rear mount mower as well as a sickle. He overturned
on the grade of the ditch and pinned himself under the tractor.
The tractor was lifted by ems and he was removed, still conscious
and talking. While being prepped for transfer by air care he had
a cardiac arrest in the ambulance. He died later from multiple
internal injuries. No ROPS was on the tractor.

on his farm. He was working horizontally on a hillside when the
tractor rolled 180 degrees crushing him underneath. The tractor
had no ROPS. The man was killed instantly. Incident was unwitnessed.

Summary Case Report: A
19-year-old male driving a tricycle tractor dropped right rear
tire off a gravel road and rolled the tractor in a ditch. The
tractor had a canvas heater housing which made escape impossible.
Victim was pinned only by his ankle, but received large penetrating
wound to his upper leg / groin area which severed his femoral
artery. Victim quickly bled to death. Wound probably came from
iron structure of heater housing.

Summary Case Report:
72 year old farmer was spraying weeds in his pasture using an
ATV, 4-wheeled machine. He was driving downhill on a steep hill
and hit a rut, which threw the farmer from the machine. The ATV
then rolled on top of the man and crushed him. He was not found
for 30-45 minutes. He was dead at the scene from crushing chest
injuries.

48 year old president of an industrial management company was
mowing grass on a bank of his office property. He was using an
older tricycle type tractor with a sickle bar attached. The tractor
slid sideways down the embankment and rolled over pinning the
victim underneath a rear tire. The man was dead at the scene.
He had been warned many times about mowing that bank with that
tractor. No ROPS were on the tractor.

Summary Case Report:
50 year old farmer was driving a tractor down a county road when
he pulled to the right when he passed a stalled car on the opposite
side of the road. A short distance later, apparently to miss a
mailbox on his side, the farmer veered into the right hand ditch,
overturning the tractor. The farmer was fatally crushed under
the tractor which had no ROPS.

Summary Case Report:
60 year old farmer was using an older, narrow-front tractor, equipped
with a sickle bar, to cut hay. While cutting on the edge of a
field, on a slight slope, the left rear tire went over a tree
stump which caused the tractor to rollover, crushing the farmer.
The stump was about 15 inches high and was hidden in the grass.
The farmer was dead at the scene. The tractor didn't have a Roll
Over Protective Structure.

60 year old farmer's helper was using an older AC, narrow-front
tractor to mow grass at a friend's farm. He was mowing the driveway
to the farm, going around a culvert, when the tractor rolled over
on top of him. He suffered crushing chest injuries and was dead
at the scene. The tractor had no ROPS. The ditch was only five
feet deep. He was very experienced and friends are puzzled why
he drove parallel to the driveway.

Summary Case Report:
71 year old cattle farmer was using an older narrow-front tractor
with loader to feed cattle at his farm. While driving near the
top edge of an earthen silage pit, the right rear wheel fell into
the corner of the pit and the tractor overturned into the pit
area, which was 7 1/2 feet deep. He was thrown from the tractor,
not pinned under it, and suffered fatal chest injuries. He had
history of advanced heart disease. No ROPS were on the tractor.

63 year old farmer and banker was mowing a roadside ditch using
an older narrow-front tractor with an attached belly mower. He
was driving north in the eastern ditch cutting grass on an embankment.
He went too far up the slope and overturned the tractor on himself,
causing crushing chest injuries. He was dead at the scene. He
had mowed this section of ditch many times previously. No ROPS
were on the tractor.

Summary Case Report:
34 year old man was helping a friend chop and store fresh silage
on a farm. He was driving a tractor helping to pack down the silage.
He drove the tractor up a steep side of the pile and the tractor
overturned backwards crushing the man underneath. The tractor
did not have a ROPS. The victim was warned that the pile was getting
too steep just moments before the overturn.

Summary Case Report:
46 year old draftsman for an electronics company was helping his
dad by cutting firewood at his farm. He was working alone using
a tractor cutting trees on a steep wooded hillside. The tractor
had a wide front and no ROPS. He was driving up a steep hill pulling
a log with a log chain when the tractor overturned backwards crushing
the man underneath. The chain was attached to the drawbar of the
tractor.

47 year old farmer was driving a tractor down a 15-foot wide grass
path between farm fields. It was a wide front tractor without
ROPS. He was pulling a sprayer behind him, and was holding a wand,
spraying weeds along the path. His wheels veered off the path
and the tractor rolled down a steep embankment crushing the man
as it rolled. The tractor rolled 1 1/2 times. The ditch was 8-10
feet deep.

65 year old farmer was driving a 1967 wide front tractor down
a gravel road when his left front tire came off. This caused the
tractor to travel out-of-control into the left ditch. The farmer
was thrown or jumped into the ditch, and the tractor rolled over
completely, crushing the man under the left rear tire. The tractor
had no ROPS.

63 year old man raised horses on an acreage. He was driving an
older narrow-front tractor with front-end loader, clearing snow
from a farm driveway. He did not turn sharp enough into the farm
lane, or drove too close to the edge of the driveway, and went
over the east bank. The tractor hit a tree stump and flipped over
in the ditch. He was thrown from the tractor and received fatal
injuries. No ROPS.

52 year old accountant and farmer was using an older narrow-front
tractor to move dirt, filling in a ravine. He was traveling across
the side of a hill with a load of dirt in his raised bucket when
the tractor overturned pinning him underneath one of the rear
tires. He was described as an overly cautious worker, and relatives
suspect the load may have shifted. The tractor did not have a
ROPS (roll over protective structure).

46 year old farmer was driving a narrow-front tractor equipped
with a front-end loader which was holding up one end of a broken
plow by a chain. Another tractor was in front lifting the plow
with its 3-point hitch. The victim and a relative were driving
out of a field onto a gravel road. When they turned the corner,
the pull from the first tractor caused the other to rollover in
the ditch, crushing the victim

40 year old farmer was using an older skid-steer loader (equipped
with front forks) to pick up cut grass along a ditch-to feed to
cattle. He was working alone when he apparently backed off into
the ditch and overturned the machine on himself. He was partially
thrown out of the machine and was crushed underneath. The skid-steer
loader did not have a ROPS or seatbelt, and provided no protection
from the liftarms, or in case of rollover.

Summary Case Report:
51 year old owner of a small sand blasting company was trying
to move a trailer-mounted sand blaster pot containing three tons
of sand. He was backing up his narrow-front tractor, pulling the
pot up a slight hill with a chain attached to front bucket of
tractor. Needing more pull, he hooked a truck to the drawbar of
the tractor with a chain. His wife was driving the truck (at an
angle) down a driveway. While they were pulling, the tractor was
pulled over sideways, overturning on the man.
