Pharmaceutical Case Management and Living Well with a Disability
The purpose of this randomized controlled trial is to test the effectiveness of an eight-week group-session health promotion program (Living Well with a Disability) augmented with a cooperative care model of medication management (Pharmaceutical Case Management).

Robert B. Wallace (PI) 10/1/03 – 9/30/08

Integrating Aging and Cancer Research
This is a planning and development (P20) grant proposal to add a Developing Program in Cancer and Aging (CAP) to the research activities of the University of Iowa (UI) Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center (HCCC).

NCI
Cancer Care and Outcomes Research Surveillance (CanCORS) Consortium
The overall goal of this proposal is to use the state of Iowa as a laboratory for determining the effects of lung cancer patient decision-making and clinician cancer management practices to determine those practices that maximize patient survivorship and quality of life. Iowa is one of six research sites participating in the study.

The Marginal Benefits of Adjuvant Treatments for Early-Stage Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer: Estimation and Validation Using Instrumental Variable Techniques.
This study assesses whether adjuvant treatments for early-stage lung cancer patients have been over-or underused by estimating the benefits of these treatment using instrumental variable methods.

Recently Completed

John M Brooks Co-Principal Investigator/Deputy Director 4/11/00 – 4/10/05.

Lymphoma SPORE Developmental Research Award
Heterogeneity of treatment benefit by grade of follicular lymphoma
The purpose of our proposed research is to determine whether anthracycline-containing combination chemotherapy is optimally used among patients with follicular lymphomas. The SEER-Medicare database will be employed, and 1,172 patients diagnosed with stage III or IV follicular non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in eleven SEER areas from 1991-1996 will be included. We hypothesize that there are treatment benefits from CHOP/CNOP (cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin/mitoxantrone, vincristine, prednisone) in subgroups of follicular lymphoma.

Elizabeth A. Chrischilles (PI) 9/30/00 – 9/29/04
CDC
Care access, drug effects, aging and mobility disability
The goal of this project is to evaluate risk factors for and outcomes of secondary conditions overall and with a specific focus on adverse drug reactions (ADRs), among a population-based cohort of 2,384 persons aged 18 and over with mobility disablement sampled from Medicare aged and Medicare disabled enrollment files (the Prevention of Secondary Conditions study).

Elizabeth A. Chrischilles (PI) 12/1/01 – 11/30/03
Amgen Inc.
Impact of Patient and Provider Characteristics on the Treatment, Outcomes and Costs of Neutropenia among Patients with NHL.
Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL) is the fifth most common cancer in the U.S. The purpose of this study is to link cancer registry data with administrative data (discharge abstract, Medicare claims) to study neutropenic hospitalizations and their consequences among people with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Brian Lund (PI- Laureate Psychiatric Research Center; Tulsa, Oklahoma)
Ryan Carnahan (PI – University of Iowa)
Fellowship Research
Prescribing Trends of Psychiatric Medications
The purpose of this research is to use electronic pharmacy claims from the Iowa Medicaid program as a barometer of prescribing practices for psychiatric medications for the state. The program describes trends in prescribing within therapeutic classes over time and the influence of various clinical and environmental factors on prescribing.

Gerard Rushton (PI) 5/1/02 – 4/30/05

A GIS Based Workbench to Interpret Cancer Maps
This research will develop and test a methodology for identifying regions of excess cancer burden for breast and colorectal cancer in Iowa. It will refine measures of geographic access to cancer prevention, treatment, and screening services in Iowa by computing values using fine-scaled geographic data on individuals, the spatial choices of individuals, and the locations of service providers.

Shinobu Watanabe-Galloway (PhD Dissertation)
Mental health of mobility disabled elders: the effects of physical illness and disabilities on mental health.
The purpose of this project is to use a population-based, three-year longitudinal survey database linked to Medicare claims to study mobility limitations and their relationship with mental health diagnoses.
