Don’t let a dumbbell get you down! A Strength Training Class – This 6-week class is for people of all ages and abilities to improve muscle strength. Resistance training is an important component of physical activity that helps with weight control and osteoporosis prevention. Learn strength-building exercises with hand weights in a fun and encouraging atmosphere. Instructor: Ken Mobily, Ph.D., UI Leisure Studies/Therapeutic Recreation Program. Dr. Mobily has extensive experience in research, teaching, and practice related to physical activity.

Beginner T’ai Chi Class – This 11-week course is an introduction to the meditative martial art of t’ai chi ch’uan. The class will include exercises and the first third of the Yang-style short form. There may be an option to continue the class to complete the form depending on student interest and availability of the instructor. Instructor: Kelly O’Berry, has studied t’ai chi for 14 years and continues to practice with a beginner’s mind.

The University of Iowa Healthful Living Program (HLP) is a service-oriented component of the Preventive Intervention Center in the Department of Epidemiology, College of Public Health (Neal Kohatsu, director). HLP is designed to help individuals adopt and maintain a healthy lifestyle. The goal is to help individuals optimize their health using the science base in prevention.
Classes and other services will be offered in the following areas: 1) Life Management (time management, stress reduction), 2) Nutrition (cooking demonstrations), 3) Physical Activity, and 4) Use of Preventive Services. HLP offers services to individuals as well as providing worksite-based health and wellness services.
