The Department of Health Management and Policy, in the College of Public Health at The University of Iowa, seeks tenure eligible candidates for the position of Department Head. The Department Head serves as the departmental executive officer and reports directly to the Dean of the College. The Department is one of five academic units and twenty-nine research and training centers within the College.
Since becoming a unit within the College of Public Health, the Department of Health Management and Policy has significantly enhanced its faculty complement, research portfolio, and academic programming. The Department’s 13 primary faculty members currently serve as PIs for over $16 million in grants and contracts. The Department’s MHA program is nationally-recognized and the PhD curriculum recently was revised and is strong. The Department has collaborative arrangements with the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, other colleges and departments within the University, and a broad range of healthcare organizations. Combined degree programs are in place with the Colleges of Business and Law and with the Department of Urban and Regional Planning.
Over 1,100 alumni of the MHA program work in a wide variety of hospitals, health systems, and other healthcare organizations throughout the nation and overseas. PhD program alumni hold positions in many academic institutions and professional associations, as well as operational settings. The HMP Alumni Association is well-organized, is one of the College’s Founding Partners, and provides significant advisory and financial resources to the Department.
Candidates must possess a doctoral degree in a related field, have an established record of scholarly achievement, publications, external grant funding in health services research, and administrative leadership experience. The candidate must understand the business of health care and be able to foster effective, multi-disciplinary collaboration with academic departments throughout the university and with health-related organizations in the public and private sectors. The candidate also must have a demonstrated commitment to diversity in the work/academic environment. S/he should be able to mentor graduate students and junior faculty, and contribute effectively to innovative instructional programs at both the doctoral and master’s degree level. Appointment at the level of professor is expected.
