Description and Learner Objectives
The MHA program meets the needs of those seeking managerial positions in health care or health-related organizations.
The Master of Health Administration (MHA) program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME), the primary accrediting agency for health management education.
The philosophy underlying the organization of the curriculum is to provide students with the broad base of knowledge and skill which will not only allow them to compete successfully for high quality entry level positions, but will also provide the basis for lifelong success as health care executives.
The overall learning objectives of the curriculum include:
- Structuring and positioning health organizations to achieve optimum performance.
- Financial management of health organizations under alternative financing mechanisms.
- Leadership, interpersonal, and communications skills in managing human resources and health professionals in diverse organizational environments.
- Managing information resources and collecting, analyzing, and using business and health information in decision-making.
- Statistical, quantitative, and economic analysis in decision-making.
- Legal and ethical analysis applied to business and clinical decision-making.
- Organizational and governmental health policy formulation, implementation, and effect.
- Assessment and understanding of the health status of populations, determinants of health and illness, and managing health risks and behaviors in diverse populations.
- The development, organization, financing, performance, and change of health systems in diverse communities drawing broadly on the social and behavioral sciences.
- Business and health outcomes measurement, process/outcome relationships and methods for performance improvement in health care organizations.
These learning objectives are related in turn to a set of Professional Standards and Development Objectives such that the students can:
- Demonstrate the ability to listen well and to communicate effectively, both verbally and in written form, with diverse audiences.
- Demonstrate the ability to work comfortably and effectively in multi-disciplinary teams.
- Understand the current standards of ethical and moral conduct which apply to the field of health management and develop a commitment to contribute toward further defining and elevating these standards in future years.
- Demonstrate synthesis of the knowledge, skills, and attitudes gained through prior experience and graduate studies into the overall capacity and level of maturity required to function effectively in meeting the performance expectations associated with entry-level positions in the field of health management.
- Demonstrate commitment to a steady pattern of personal and professional development throughout their career in health management based on the foundation of knowledge and skills gained through prior experience and graduate studies.
