University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Health Administrative Graduate Research Assistantship

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Health Administrative Graduate Research Assistantship is awarded annually to a qualified entering first year minority* student in the Master of Health Administration program. The purpose of this assistantship is to attract qualified students who are U.S. citizens from underrepresented populations (i.e., African American, Hispanic, Native American and Pacific Islanders) to careers in academic medical centers. Additional information about the UI Hospitals and Clinics can be found at: http://www.uihealthcare.com/

Donna Katen-Bahensky, UI Hospitals and Clinics director and CEO, said strengthening the diversity of the leadership and management talent found in academic medical centers is critical. “I have been able to see firsthand how diversity in the leadership ranks enriches the work environment and improves patient care,” Katen-Bahensky said. “As a health care leader I feel an obligation to mentor and nurture minority individuals to encourage them to seek careers in health care management.”

The student selected will have the opportunity to work directly with UIHC senior leadership. The student will also be assigned a mentor from UIHC Administration to provide the student a broad exposure to and understanding of the unique character of academic medical centers. The student will receive a 25% time Graduate Research Assistantship for the academic year, health benefits, and qualifies for in-state tuition and other related benefits.

*The first applicant pool will consist of students designated by the Department as underrepresented, however, if a qualified person is not found the search will be extended to all interested students. The final selection is made in consultation with senior management from UI Hospitals and Clinics.
