Admissions
The Department of Health Management and Policy invites applications from individuals who hold a bachelor’s or master's degree from an accredited college or university.
Applicants with a bachelor's degree in health, business, economics, social science, or related areas who are interested in research in health services and policy are encouraged to apply to the Ph.D. program. A graduate degree in administration, public health, or health planning is excellent preparation, as is experience in a health care setting.
Deadline
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis for admission the following fall. Students are encouraged to apply before January 15th. Applications recieved after March 31st will be considered on a space available basis. Because financial decisions are made throughout the admissions period, early applicants are more likely to recieve full consideration for financial aid.
Selection Criteria:
The Department bases its admission decision on:
- An applicant’s academic potential as demonstrated through grade point average and test scores.
- GPA. We look for a GPA or 3.25 or better (on a 4.0 scale).
- Official GRE, a combined verbal and quantitative score of 1100 or above, or
- TOEFL, where applicable. International applicants who do not hold a baccalaureate degree (or higher) from an accredited college or university in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada (except Quebec), Australia, or New Zealand are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign language (TOEFL), earning a score of at least 600 (paper-based), 250 (computer-based), or 100 (internet-based). International applicants whose TOEFL scores range from 550-599 (paper-based), 213-249 (computer-based), or 81-99 (internet-based) are required to take English fluency courses. Applicants whose TOEFL scores fall below those ranges are not considered for admission.
- Letters of Recommendation (3). Applicants are strongly encouraged to include at least two letters from faculty members who are well acquainted with your academic performance.
- Statement of Objectives. The Statement of objectives should address commitment, goals, and qualifications including work experience and reasons for interest in our program. The Admissions Committee seeks evidence of maturity, strength of purpose and academic potential as well as potential for success in an academic, health services research, or policy analyst career.
- Relevant work and/or volunteer experience is considered.
- Interview. Upon review by the Admissions Committee qualified applicants are invited to campus for an interview begining in January. Candidates unable to travel to campus are interviewed by phone. Interviews are required bevore acceptance into the Ph.D. program.
