Overview
Description and Learner Objectives
The primary goal of the doctoral program in the Department of HMP, already approved as a major, is to prepare graduates in health management, health policy, and health services research. Graduates seek professional careers as researchers, teachers and practitioners in academic institutions, government agencies, and private industry. The target student group consists of interested applicants who have a master’s degree in social science, management, law, nursing administration, pharmacy administration, or public health administration. The PhD requires 77 semester hours beyond the baccalaureate.
Objectives were identified that specify expectations for the PhD students. By the completion of the first year of doctoral study, the PhD students should:

Have an emerging understanding of the U.S. health care delivery system.

Know the core issues in health services, including issues of access, quality, effectiveness, and cost of health care.

Understand the methods appropriate to health services research so that they can design a health services study and critique a health services research manuscript.

Be able to write coherently so that they can show focused thought, frame and express their rationale, and express their ideas clearly.

Be able to analyze and think critically, be able to integrate and synthesize material, and be able to think conceptually.
