Q. What is needed to apply to the MHA or PhD program?
A. The following:
- Completed application form
- 3 letters of reference
- Official transcripts
- GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT, VAT, and DAT scores are accepted for MHA
- GRE is required for PhD
- Statement of Objectives
- TOEFL, where applicable
- Example of Scholarly Writing (PhD candidates only)
Q. What is the minimum GPA for students admitted into the program?
A. 3.0 or above cumulative GPA for MHA students and 3.25 cumulative GPA or above for Ph.D. students.
Q. How many students are accepted annually?
A. 25 for MHA and up to four Ph.D. students.
Q. Can I apply for the spring semester of this year?
A. These program are fall semester admit only. The MHA
is a full-time two year program.
Q. What is the deadline to apply?
A. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until May 1 for admission the following fall. Because financial aid decisions are made throughout the admission period, early applicants are more likely to receive financial aid
Q. Is there a student interview?
A. Yes. Beginning in early January, the Admissions Committee invites selected applicants to campus for an interview. The personal interview is an opportunity for the prospective student to learn about the field of health services administration and our Department. For those unable to visit the campus, the Committee will conduct a telephone interview.
Q. What prerequisites can I take that will help in the MHA program?
A.MHA: While no specific undergraduate major is required, prospective MHA students are strongly advised to complete introductory courses in accounting, economics, finance and statistics and to gain facility in using Excel and PowerPoint.
For the PhD program, experience in finance, economics, and statistics
coursework is recommended.
Q. What degrees do you prefer?
A. The students in the MHA program are from a variety of academic backgrounds. We do not have specific areas which are required to enter the program.
Applicants to the PhD program are expected to hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree. A graduate degree in health, social science, management, law, or a related field are acceptable depending on the applicant’s background.
Q. Is a fellowship required in the MHA program?
A. A fellowship is not required to complete the master of health administration degree. However, 90-95% of our students move immediately into a post-graduate fellowship.
Q. Could you give me an approximate starting salary I could expect once I have obtained my degree?
A. That depends on the position. Fellowships would range from the mid-30's to the mid-50's. For jobs, salary is commensurate with experience.
Q. In what areas of health care do graduates get jobs?
A. Students from the MHA program have been placed in hospitals and health systems, academic medical centers, group practices and clinics, health insurance organizations, ambulatory care centers, state hospital associations, consulting firms, government agencies, health care technology companies, military medical administration, foundations and volunteer organizations and long-term care facilities.
The primary goal of the doctoral program is educating doctoral students for health services research, education and leadership roles in universities, government and health organizations.
Q. Can I take your program on a correspondence basis?
A. The MHA program is not offered on a correspondence basis.
