Winter Vehicle Preparations

Preparing your vehicle for winter driving is a vital step to ensure the safety of yourself and others on the road. The Occupational Safety & Health Administration recommends packing an emergency bag in your vehicle that includes a flashlight, jumper cables, abrasive material (sand or kitty litter), shovel, snow brush and ice scraper, warning devices (like flares/flashlights) and blankets. For longer trips, add non-perishable, high-calorie food, water, and medications.
Prior to winter driving, seasonal vehicle maintenance is recommended. This includes checking the battery, brakes, tire tread, oil, antifreeze, and windshield wipers. Add no-freeze fluid to the window washer reservoir. Check lights and defroster systems to ensure the best visibility.
