UI Invites Participants for Munitions Workers Study
Researchers at the University of Iowa College of Public Health are inviting individuals to enroll in a research study of workers at Iowa Army Ammunition Plant, near Burlington. One aim of this study is to assess exposure to beryllium alloys among conventional weapons workers at the plant.
Anyone who worked exclusively on conventional weapons (Army) production at the IAAAP from 1950 to the present is eligible for the study, according to Dr. Lar Fuortes, who leads the IAAAP Munitions Workers Study.
Since even a single exposure to beryllium may cause some persons to show beryllium sensitivity, workers from all areas of the plant – including those who worked for short periods of time – are also eligible to enroll in the research study. Workers who enroll in the study will be given a free beryllium screenings and will be asked to complete a brief questionnaire and to provide a blood sample for analysis of beryllium sensitivity, using a test called the beryllium lymphocyte proliferation test (Be-LPT). Study participation would likely require a 30- to 45-minute time commitment. Follow-up medical evaluations will be offered for those screening positive for beryllium sensitization.
Study participants will receive compensation.
