The Agricultural Safety and Health
Training Program
has grown with support from three academic centers at The University
of Iowa: Iowa's Center for Agricultural Safety and Health, the
Great Plains Center for Agricultural Health, and the Heartland
Center for Occupational Safety and Health.
The ASH training program's goals are to increase the
knowledge and skills of health and safety professionals, and to
prepare students in research and policy issues related to agricultural
health. To realize these goals, the program was developed
with four parts:
- Academic Training
- Continuing Education
- Outreach
- EnrichmentTraining for Health Profession Students
ASH Program faculty provide lectures to the following programs:
- Medicine
- Physician Assistant
- Veterinary Medicine
- Family Medicine Residents
- Emergency Medicine Residents
Certified Safe Farm Program
The CSF program is a multi-faceted agricultural intervention research program designed to reduce the rate of injuries and illnesses in the agricultural population. The program consists of four main components that work together to offer the best opportunity of changing attitudes and behaviors of participating farmers. The components are:
- an occupational health screening,
- an on-farm safety review with performance standards,
- personalized education, and
- incentives such as insurance discounts or agribusiness discounts.
Pork Industry Training Program
The Pork Industry Training Program has been developed by The University of Iowa to educate managers and safety personnel in the pork industry about health and safety concerns and OSHA compliance. Presentations are given every other Thursday by leading researchers and industry personnel and are recorded for later playback. |
