Interpandemic Influenza Vaccination Rates in Hospital Health Care Workers: Implications for Pandemic Preparedness

Program Goal:

To help participants understand the importance of health care worker vaccination in routine interpandemic years and when pandemic influenza threatens.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn what the public health risks are when influenza vaccination rates among hospital health care workers are low in interpandemic and pandemic periods.
  • Learn about “causes” of low influenza vaccination rates in hospital health care workers.
  • Learn about “cures” for low influenza vaccination rates in hospital health care workers.
  • Learn what steps Iowa hospitals are taking to improve employee influenza vaccination rates during future interpandemic and pandemic influenza periods.

Speaker:

Charles M. Helms, M.D., Ph.D., is a professor of medicine, University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, and medical director, Office of Clinical Quality, Safety and Performance Improvement, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. An infectious disease specialist with long-standing interest in vaccination, he served on the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (CDC) and as chair and member of the National Vaccine Advisory Committee (DHHS).  He has received a Fulbright Fellowship to study vaccination policy in Australia in 2009.
