IOWA TOBACCO RESEARCH CENTER

Welcome to the Iowa Tobacco Research Center (ITRC) website. Established in 2001, the ITRC is dedicated to innovative research and education in tobacco use and prevention, as well as provision and support of culturally-competent and accessible smoking cessation services. The ITRC's efforts are focused on the areas of cessation, intervention research, population research and education.

The ITRC is operated by the Department of Community and Behavioral Health in the College of Public Health at the University of Iowa, and is located in Iowa City, Iowa.

About the Iowa Tobacco Research Center

The mission of the ITRC is to promote health and reduce illness and death in Iowa, the Midwest, the nation and the world through commitment to innovative research and education in tobacco use and prevention, as well as provision and support of culturally-competent and accessible smoking cessation services.

The ITRC will focus efforts toward achieving these goals:

  • Helping all individuals make healthy choices about tobacco use.
  • Reducing exposure to secondhand smoke (ETS).
  • Making evidence-based and culturally-competent cessation services available to all youth, pregnant women and adults.
  • Providing state-of-the-art training in tobacco use interventions to healthcare providers and health educators.
  • Providing and supporting effective and culturally-competent prevention programs.
  • Educating policy makers and community leaders about policies governing underage access to tobacco products, environmental exposure to tobacco smoke and the cigarette excise tax.

The vision of the ITRC is to become an internationally recognized center and a leading source of expertise in comprehensive tobacco control. This will be accomplished through research, education, intervention and service.
