The Heartland Center for Occupational Health and Safety is hosting its
10th annual health symposium, "The Business of Occupational Health and
Safety," March 27-28 at Hotel Vetro in downtown Iowa City.

Osher Institute, Carver College of Medicine Offer Mini Medical School
The Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine will host its
annual four-session Mini Medical School, "Making Sense of Your Health:
See More. Hear More. Do More." in April on the UI campus. The program
is offered in partnership with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute,
based in the Center on Aging.

Susan J. Curry Named Dean of UI College of Public Health
Susan J. Curry, director of the Institute for Health Research and
Policy and professor of health policy and administration in the School
of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago, will become
the new dean of the College of Public Health effective Aug. 1. She
succeeds James A. Merchant, who will step down from the deanship but
remain on the college's faculty.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the Center on Aging is
offering "Behind the Scenes at the UI Museum of Art: Special

Richard Raymond, M.D., undersecretary for food safety with the U.S.
Department of Agriculture, will deliver the lecture "Enhancing Public
Health Protection through Food Safety," at 12:30 p.m. Friday, April 4,
in Room 2117 of the Medical Education and Research Facility.

Cancer on the Rise in Iowa
(Iowa City Press-Citizen, 3/15/2008)
The 2008 report from the State Health Registry of Iowa projects 16,000
new cancer cases to be diagnosed this year, an increase of 300 cases
from last year, or about five cancer cases per 1,000 Iowans.

Chrischilles to Speak in CBH Seminar Series
ELIZABETH CHRISCHILLES, professor of epidemiology, will deliver the
lecture, "Population Sciences and the Holden Comprehensive Cancer
Center," from 11 a.m. to noon, Thursday, April 3, in the Seebohm
Conference Room (283 EMRB).

IRB Educational Sessions Available Through May
The Institutional Review Board and the Human Subjects Office will
offer an educational session, "How to Complete a New Project
Application and Tips & Tricks for Faster Review by the IRB," from 2:30

Genes and Aging Subject of Parkin Lecture on April 3
Cynthia Kenyon, a molecular biologist at the University of California,
San Francisco, will present the Parkin Lecture on Aging, "Genes and
Cells that Control the Rate of Aging," at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 3,
in Room 1110A of the UI Medical Education and Research Facility
(MERF). A pre-lecture reception will begin at 4 p.m. in the MERF
atrium.

Conference Will Focus on Health, Environment, and Bioeconomy April 8
The Center for Health Effects of Environmental Contamination will host
"Keep It Small, Keep It All: Cultivating the Bioeconomy at the Local
Scale" on Tuesday, April 8, at the Sheraton Hotel in downtown Iowa
City. Speakers will address local energy options; the economic,
health, and environmental impact of local food production and
distribution; and policies that promote and hinder small-scale
efficiencies.

Obesity Conference Set for April 8
A half-day conference on Tuesday, April 8, will bring together
researchers, clinicians, and other professionals to discuss innovative
approaches to understanding, treating, and preventing obesity-related
illnesses. Attendees will participate in breakout sessions on
nutrition, behavior/exercise, community/health disparity,
imaging/biology, epidemiology/genetics, and pediatrics.

Reminder: GPCAH Proposals Due March 31
The Great Plains Center for Agricultural Health is currently seeking
proposals for its feasibility/pilot project grant program. Total
funding up to $50,000 will be available for new feasibility/pilot
projects this year. Individual project awards will range up to
$20,000. The deadline for application is March 31, 2008.

Celebrate Research Week April 1 and 2
"Research Week 2008: Innate Immunity" will take place April 1-2 on the UI
health sciences campus. The annual event, sponsored by the Roy J. and
Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, the College of Public Health,
and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Iowa City Health Care
System, will include five public lectures from leading experts on
innate immunity, and poster sessions featuring the research of UI
students, postdoctoral fellows, faculty, and staff.

NIH Public Access Policy Addressed in Research Council
Chris Shaffer and Chris Childs, librarians with the Hardin Library for
the Health Sciences, attended the CPH Research Council meeting on
Thursday, March 27 to review the new NIH Public Access Policy. This
policy, which requires scientists to submit journal articles that
arise from NIH funding to a digital archive, takes effect for all
manuscripts accepted for publication on or after April 7, 2008.

Global Health Studies Conference Travel Scholarship: Applications Due April 16
The Global Health Studies Program invites applications from students
for a single $500 scholarship to attend a U.S. or foreign global
health conference or meeting during 2008. Applications are due by 5:00
p.m. on Wednesday, April 16. For more information, contact Kristi
Fitzpatrick, grants coordinator, international programs, at
kristi-fitzpatrick@uiowa.edu.

TB Screening Update for New International Students
The UI Student Health TB Surveillance Program reports that screening
for tuberculosis for all new international students will be conducted
using the QuantiFERON-TB Gold (QFT-G) test. The QFT-G test replaces
the TB skin test. The TB Facilitator Newsletter, published by Student
Health, provides additional information about TB, including details of
the screening test now in use for new international students.

CPH Graduate Students Honored
As a part of Graduate Student Recognition Week, the College of Public
Health hosted a recognition event on Tuesday, March 25. About 40 CPH
students attended, along with department heads, directors of graduate
studies, and graduate program coordinators. TANYA UDEN-HOLMAN,
associate dean for education and student affairs, formally recognized
and thanked the many student association leaders who were present.
