School Safety, Crisis Counseling Expert to Speak Oct. 6
Marleen Wong, a national expert on school safety programs and crisis
counseling, will present a seminar on the UI campus from 3 to 4 p.m.
Oct. 6, in room 2117 of the Medical Education and Research Facility.
Her lecture, "The Aftermath of School Violence, Disasters and
Terrorism: Evidence-Based Practices that Help Children Cope from
Traumatic Events,” is free and open to the public.

UI Prevention Research Center Funds Pilot Projects
The University of Iowa Prevention Research Center has awarded a
total of $60,000 in one-year grants to support pilot research projects
aimed at improving the health of rural Iowans.

NIH Selects UI and Polk County for National Children's Study
The University of Iowa, along with health and educational
organizations in Polk County, has been selected to participate in the
National Children's Study, a long-range comprehensive National
Institutes of Health investigation on the interaction of genes and the
environment on children's health. The investigation is the largest
child health study for the United States and is expected to benefit
the health of adults, as well. Participation for the UI and Polk
County partners includes an initial five-year $11.9 million grant.

Plastic Chemical BPA Resists Regulation
(The McGill Daily, Canada, 9/29/2008)
Firmer evidence is needed to convince regulators BPA should be
restricted even though a recent paper found a correlation between it
and human diseases. “It’s a scientific problem that has many
dimensions," said ROBERT WALLACE, professor of epidemiology. "What
we’d like to do from a human perspective is find a population of
people whose exposure to BPA is known and follow their health over a
number of years.”

Dawson’s Alzheimer Research Featured in Newsletter
(Nuera On-Site, 10/1/2008)
JEFF DAWSON’s research on Alzheimer patient’s driving abilities was
featured in Nuera On-Site, an online neurology newsletter. Dawson,
associate professor of biostatistics, presented a research poster on
the topic as part of the 133rd Annual Meeting of American Neurological
Association which was held Sept. 21-24.

Merchant Named Visiting Professor at UNC
(The Herald Sun, North Carolina, 10/1/2008)
The University of North Carolina Chapel Hill Gillings School of Global
Public Health has named JAMES MERCHANT as Gillings Visiting Professor.
Merchant was dean of the UI College of Public Health until August
2008 and is a UNC alumnus. His professorship will be based in the
department of environmental sciences and engineering.

The Rebuild Iowa Public Health and Health Care Task Force, which
includes CPH experts Chris Atchison and John Lundell, has released
its first report. The task force examined four broad issue areas:

Flu Vaccine Offered on Oakdale Campus
The influenza vaccine will be available free for full-time UI employees
and for $15.50 for temporary staff and student workers on Nov. 3 from
1-3:30 p.m. at Oakdale Hall in the Gold Room. Those interested must

The 12th Triennial Congress on Public Health will bring together
leaders from across the globe to discuss important public health issues. The
congress, to be held in Istanbul, Turkey on April 27-May 1, 2009, is
accepting submissions for oral presentations, posters, and session
abstracts.

The majority of these messages are scams that attempt to install
