Details Help Researchers Identify Weapons Workers for Health Screenings
University of Iowa researchers investigating the health of former
atomic weapons workers at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant (IAAAP) near
Burlington are tapping new information that details specific areas
within the plant that were once part of the United States' nuclear
weapons infrastructure. The information is helping the researchers,
based in the UI College of Public Health, to identify former IAAAP
workers who may be eligible for free health screenings for health
problems stemming from exposures to workplace hazards.

Radon Expert Urges Testing During National Radon Action Month
January is National Radon Action Month, which serves as a good
reminder for homeowners to test for radon, according to a University
of Iowa expert in radon research.

Two University of Iowa faculty members have been awarded 2008-2009
College of Public Health-Carver College of Medicine New Investigator
Research Awards. The awards assist newly appointed primary or joint
faculty in the College of Public Health or the Roy J. and Lucille A.
Carver College of Medicine to advance their research activities.

Snetselaar: Short Walks Make Big Difference in Health

The best way to start exercising is by walking, a simple activity
everyone can do that requires no special equipment, says LINDA
SNETSELAAR, professor of epidemiology. "If you can walk for 150
minutes a week -- that's 30 minutes a day, five days a week -- you can
make a marked difference in your health," Snetselaar said.

Bout of Ice Poses Safety Concern: Grafft
(Gazette, Cedar Rapids and Iowa City, 1/11/2009)
In his January column, LAMAR GRAFFT, safety specialist with Iowa’s
Center for Agricultural Safety and Health, warns readers to take
caution during the icy season. “Emergency rooms fill up in this kind of
weather with people who just stepped out for a minute,” Grafft said.

Radon: Still Bad and Getting Worse
(Lancaster New Era, 1/15/2009)
Not enough people remember the radon scare of the 1980s in
Pennsylvania. A report found six Pennsylvania counties had the highest
average radon levels in the country. "Sadly, more people are exposed
to radon than ever before," said UI professor of occupational and
environmental health and epidemiology and Lancaster native, R. WILLIAM
FIELD, testifying before the President's Cancer Panel in Washington
last month.

MLK Human Rights Week Features Several Events
The University is hosting a series of events in honor of Martin Luther
King Day and Human Rights Week, starting with a Community Opening
Celebration at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 19 the second floor ballroom of the Iowa
Memorial Union.

CPH Event: Documentary About Social Conditions, Health
As part of the Human Rights week, a documentary series called
“Unnatural Causes… Is Inequality Making Us Sick?” will be shown in
segments on Jan. 22 and 29 in the CPH Student Commons (E177 GH),
sponsored by the college and the CPH Student Association. The
documentary explores how social conditions affect health, even more
than medical care, behaviors, and genes. Pizza will be served.

Flexible Pay awards are aimed at recognizing exceptional performance
among non-organized professional and scientific staff. Nominations for

Cayuse 424 Demonstrated at Research Council Meeting
Jennifer Lassner, senior associate director of UI sponsored programs,
introduced Cayuse 424 to researchers at the Research Council Meeting
held Jan. 8. Cayuse is a “system-to-system” alternative to the
“package” grants.gov submission procedure. Lassner explained the
program has been a useful alternative to Adobe forms have replaced the
PureEdge forms, which are now obsolete.

the Biostatistics Summer Initiative is Jan. 30. The program provides
biostatistical training and applied research opportunities for
underrepresented minority undergraduates. Interested junior or senior
minority students with math or biological sciences backgrounds are
encouraged to apply.

The CPH Student Association is currently selling red, long-sleeve
t-shirts as a fundraiser for the American Heart Association. Profits
will be donated in the name of Go Red for Women. The shirts are on
sale for $15.00 from now until Jan. 22. Shirts will be delivered the
week of Feb. 1, in time for National Wear Red Day, Feb. 6.

The Jakobsen Conference is a local, spring conference for UI graduate
students run entirely by fellow graduate students in the Graduate
Student Senate. The conference provides a forum for oral, poster, and

Zamba Judges at National Research Competition for Minority Students
GIDEON ZAMBA, an assistant professor of biostatistics, judged a
research competition at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for
Minority Students (ABRCMS) in Orlando, Fla., on Nov. 5-8, 2008. The
conference is designed to encourage underrepresented minority students
to pursue advanced training in the biomedical and behavioral sciences
and provide faculty mentors with resources for facilitating the
success of these students.

Barkey's Photo Collage From Research in Angola Featured
NANETTE BARKEY, assistant professor of community and behavioral health
and anthropology, created a wellness questionnaire geared toward
returning health to people in war-ravaged Angola. She asked Angolans
to document their world in pictures, which were featured in the Fall
issue of the UI Spectator.

Donham Named 2009 Agromedicine "Leader in the Field"
KELLEY DONHAM has been named the Journal of Agromedicine "Leader in
the Field" for 2009. The recognition goes to an individual who has
made significant contributions in agricultural safety and health
practice, policy, and research. Donham is professor of occupational and
environmental health and director of Iowa’s Center for Agricultural
Safety and Health.

Feb. 10 "Meet the Author!" web cast, titled "Energy and Public Health:
The Challenge of Peak Petroleum," will air from 2:30-3:30 p.m.
(Eastern). The web cast will feature Howard Frumkin, director of the
National Center for Environmental Health, Agency for Toxic Substances
and Disease Registry at the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, and MICHAEL OSTERHOLM, member of CPH Board of Advisors and
director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at

CPH Alum Named ABC's "Person of the Week"
Pamela Meyer Davis, CEO of Edward Hospital in Naperville, IL (MA
hospital and health administration, 1973) was selected as the ABC
News' “Person of the Week” for her role in helping expose “pay to
play” corruption in Illinois politics. The FBI investigation that
ensued ultimately led to the arrest of Gov. Rod Blagojevich.
