Eighty-seven workers died from traumatic injuries while at work in
Iowa during 2008, according to the Iowa Fatality Assessment and
Control Evaluation (IA FACE) program based in the College of Public Health.

The Heartland Center for Occupational Health and Safety is accepting

UI Study Finds MRSA in Midwestern Swine, Workers
The first study documenting methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus
aureus (MRSA) in swine and swine workers in the United States has been
published by University of Iowa researchers. The investigators found a
strain of MRSA, known as ST398, in a swine production system in the
Midwest, according to the paper published online by the science
journal PLoS One.

UI Teaches Around the World Thanks to Elluminate Live

Physicians across the globe still seek the expertise of Ignacio
Ponseti, a UI physician renowned for treating club foot. Ponseti and
others use teleconferencing software to connect with the world. In the
past 18 months, UI has connected with 630 Internet sites in 60
countries, said TOM COOK, professor of occupational and environmental
health and administrator of Eluminate Live, which connects UI with
people in remote parts of the world that might have low bandwidth
telephone modem connections.

Thorne: Mega Hog Confinements Can Harm Health
(Science News, 1/16/2009)
Studies document the ill effects of megafarms, which typically have
thousands of livestock packed into small areas, said PETER THORNE,
professor of occupational and environmental health. Higher rates of
lung disease have been found in workers at large poultry and swine
operations and respiratory problems increase in communities when
large-scale farms move in, Thorne said.

Grafft Suggests Safety as 2009 Resolution

LAMAR GRAFFT, safety specialist with Iowa’s Center for Agricultural
Safety and Health, recommends farmers make focusing on safety needs
around the farm as their New Years' Resolution this year. "Not just
any safety needs, but those that affect your children or
grandchildren," he said. "About 100 children are still killed on farms
in the United States every year as a result of traumatic injuries or
poisonings."

Op-Ed: Hog Research, Funding Relationship Complicated
(The Daily Iowan, 1/21/2009)
An opinion article about potential conflicts of interest in scientific
research cited the work of TARA SMITH, associate professor of
epidemiology, who recently documented methicillin-resistant
Staphylococcus aureus in swine and swine workers. In addition to a
variety of other support for this research, Smith’s project was
partially supported by funds from the National Pork Board.

Dean Holds Forums to Introduce Strategic Plan DevelopmentThe College of Public Health is embarking on a strategic planning
initiative to develop a 2010-2015 plan. Dean SUE CURRY held forums
this week to invite faculty, staff, and students to participate in
subgroups that will develop a draft plan for each focus area:
education, external relations, faculty recruitment and retention,
global public health, infrastructure, public health impact, and
research foci and organization. Be looking for college-wide volunteer
solicitations next week. For other questions, please contact Kathy

Nominations Sought for Epidemiology's Hsu-Li Lectureship
The Department of Epidemiology is accepting nominations for the Hsu-Li
Distinguished Lectureship in International Epidemiology. The award
honors persons who have demonstrated exemplary leadership in
international public health and brings them to campus to create
opportunities for students, faculty, and professionals to encounter
and be challenged by their insights. The award winner will deliver a
formal lecture in Fall 2009 and participate in other events. Nomination
deadline: March 1.

APHA Announces Call for Abstracts
The American Public Health Association (APHA) announces the Call for
Abstracts for the 2009 Annual Meeting and Exposition to be held Nov.
7-11 in Philadelphia. The theme will be “Water and Public Health: The
21st Century Challenge.” APHA encourages abstracts in all areas of
public health and abstracts that focus on the theme. Deadlines range
from Feb. 9-13, 2009 depending on the Section, SPIG, Caucus, or Forum.

NIH Issues New Salary CapEffective Jan. 1, the National Institutes of Health has issued a notice
announcing that the Executive Level I salary increased to $196,700.
The Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2008, Public Law 110-161,
restricts the amount of direct salary of an individual under an NIH
grant to Executive Level I of the federal executive pay scale. NIH
continues to operate on a continuing resolution through March 6, 2009.

Women's Resource and Action Center Seeking Scholarhip Applicants
The Margaret P. Benson Memorial Scholarship program recognizes
qualified female applicants who demonstrate financial need and are
committed to women’s issues, diversity, and social activism. Deadline
is Feb. 13. The Jane A. Weiss Memorial Dissertation Scholarship is
available to a Ph.D. candidate whose dissertation focuses on issues
pertaining to women and who has demonstrated commitment to women’s
issues through activism. Deadline is Feb. 6.

January Is Birth Defects Prevention MonthThis year's area of focus is “Obesity Prevention and Weight Management
– Before, During, and After Pregnancy.” Obesity has been identified as
a leading public health concern. It can also be associated with birth
