Fuortes' Study Seeks IAAP Ammunition Plant, Beryllium Workers

Researchers are looking for a few more former or current Iowa Army
Ammunition Plant workers to participate in a health screening
survey. "We've been trying to balance the numbers in the different
exposure groups. I think we've done very well in the lesser exposure
groups. The higher exposure groups, those are very hard to find," said
project head LAURENCE FUORTES, professor of occupational and
environmental health.

Conference Confronts Climate Change, Healthy FutureMidwest Physicians for Social Responsibility is sponsoring a
conference to confront some of the gravest health challenges of the
day those associate with global climate change. At the conference,
to be held Feb. 13-14 at Old Capitol Town Center Mall, speakers will
discuss how to transition to a healthier, more just and environmentally
sustainable future based on cleaner energy. Speakers include M.P.H
students, SAMEET SANGHA and HARB HARB.

Living with Floods Conference to Convene Experts
Living With Floods: From Science to Policy, March 11-12, offers an
opportunity to better understand the disastrous floods of summer 2008.
National experts will address topics ranging from the science of
floods to the psychological impact of displacement, from flood
mitigation to flood risk insurance. Conference fee is $50.

Mark Your Calendars: Author to Address Culture, Care
Anne Fadiman, award-winning author and professor, will speak about her
book, "The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down," which chronicles the
trials of an epileptic Hmong child and her family and the gulf between
them and American medical system. Fadiman will address how culture
complicates medicine on March 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the W10 PBB (Buchanan
Auditorium of the Business Building).

positions on UI Charter Committees, small working groups. The
Charter Committees focus on issues that range from human rights
to recreational services, from lectures to financial aid.

Celebrate Diversity at UI Cultural Diversity Festival Feb. 22
Since 1990, the Celebrating Cultural Diversity Festival has given
members of The University of Iowa and its surrounding communities an
opportunity to learn about each other through food, games, dance,
music, literature, storytelling, arts, and crafts. This event is held
from noon to 5:00 p.m. at the Fieldhouse and admission is free.
