determine whether a person with Alzheimer's disease can safely get
behind the wheel, thanks to research led by CPH biostatistician JEFFREY
DAWSON.

Alzheimer’s Patients' Test Determines Road Safety (multiple entries)
In a study of older drivers with and without early-stage Alzheimer's
disease, researchers found various tests were good predictors of their
performance on road tests. The findings suggest doctors can use tests
to help judge which patients can get behind the wheel without
endangering themselves or others. The goal is to prevent
crashes while retaining patients' rights, said lead researcher JEFFREY
DAWSON, associate professor of biostatistics. The research generated numerous news stories.

Despite Budget Cuts, Sustainability Still on UI Agenda

Amid budget-crunch talk, investing in energy-efficient technologies
still has high priority at the UI. There are six new campus buildings
underway or set for future construction that are expected to be
certified under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design
(LEED) program. The College of Public Health building was one of the
LEED-certified projects mentioned in the print version of this story.

Ramirez's Study: Sports Improve Health of Disabled Teens
(HealthBeat, Health and Human Services, 2/11/2009)
Researchers looked at injury rates among athletes at high schools that
specialize in students with disabilities. The athletes played in
adapted versions of basketball, softball, soccer, and field hockey.
MARIZEN RAMIREZ, assistant professor of occupational and environmental
health, said the injury rate for the disabled athletes was much lower
than national averages for non-disabled athletes.

UI Launches Budget Update Web Site, Solicits Ideas
The University of Iowa has created a web site to provide faculty,
staff, and students with updates about ongoing budget deliberations
and announcements and to solicit ideas for trimming expenses, as the
university works to reduce costs during uncertain economic times.

Statistics Outreach Center Offers Spring Short Courses
The Statistics Outreach Center is offering short courses for anyone
interested in learning about statistical software. Classes include:
February 23: Introduction to SAS; March 2: Introduction to SPSS; and
March 9: SAS for ANOVA and Multiple Regression. Courses will be
offered on Mondays from 6-8 p.m. in N106 of the Lindquist Center.

Nominations Sought for UI Honor Societies' Faculty Awards
Do you know of faculty members who are focused on teaching and
dedicated to students? Nominate them for the Marion L. Huit or the
James N. Murray Awards, sponsored by the Omicron Delta Kappa and
Mortar Board Honor Societies. All nominations are due on March 10.
Recipients will be presented these awards at the annual Finkbine Dinner
for Representative Student Leaders on April 14.

New Requirement for Recombinant DNA Research
Based on recommendations from the National Institutes of Health, the
Institutional Biosafety Committee is now requiring all staff
(including principal investigators, research assistants, and students)
working with recombinant DNA pass a new training course. The course
details the NIH guidelines requirements and provides information
regarding the roles and responsibilities of various personnel involved
with research.

Rezai First Recipient of Gene Ronald AwardYASMINE REZAI, Master of Health Administration student and University
Hygienic Laboratory (UHL) research assistant, is the first recipient
of the UHL's Gene Ronald Award, which recognizes those who, "exemplify
or exhibit good work ethic; an aptitude to learn new skills; good
interpersonal and communication skills; a demonstrated ability to
complete goals and assignments; self-initiated personal drive; good
organizational skills and accountability.” Gene Ronald was an employee
of UHL for 35 years.

Report Summarizes UI Health Policy ForumA recently released report summarizes presentations made at the Dec. 4,
2008, "Rebalancing Health Care in the Heartland" forum, which focused on
health care reform priorities at the state and national levels. Speakers
at the UI-sponsored forum included Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin,
Commonwealth Fund Vice President Edward Schor, Concord Coalition
Executive Director Robert Bixby, and numerous state and UI leaders
at the forefront of health reform initiatives.
