UI Organizes Flood Clean-Up Project Over Spring Break
Hundreds of homes in Cedar Rapids remain in poor condition after the
June 2008 floods, and the University of Iowa community's help is
needed to clean out and refurbish these structures over spring break.
The UI is organizing alternative spring break service project to do
post-flood cleanup in Cedar Rapids, joining volunteers from across
Iowa and the rest of the nation.

Osher Class: Registration Deadline for Memoir Writing Feb. 23
Enrollment remains open for a four-week-long writing course being
offered to adults age 50 and older through the Osher Lifelong Learning
Institute at the UI Center on Aging. The registration deadline is Feb.

UI Researchers Win Grant to Identify Air Pollutants in U.S. Cities
A team of University of Iowa researchers, including R. WILLIAM FIELD,
professor of occupational and environmental health and epidemiology
and JACOB OLESON, assistant professor of biostatistics, has received
an $899,401 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to
identify some of the most hazardous air pollutants in major U.S.
cities, including Chicago.

Dawson Study Tests Driving Skills of Alzheimer's Patients
(Radio Iowa, 2/13/2009)
A UI study, led by JEFFREY DAWSON, associate professor of biostatistics,
finds drivers who have been diagnosed with early Alzheimer's disease make more serious errors behind the wheel than their elderly counterparts who
have no sign of the illness. Dawson says the Alzheimer's patients made
about 25 percent more errors overall but, in particular, lane observance
errors were about 50 percent more common.

Tests May Predict Alzheimer’s Patients Drive Abilities
(The Gazette, Cedar Rapids and Iowa City, 2/14/2009)
Doctors may someday have a driving skills test to help family members
decide if Grandpa should still be driving. UI researchers are
developing tests. There is no cure, “so we’re in a management
situation,” said study author JEFFREY DAWSON, associate professor of
biostatistics.

Former Health Care Exec to Share Peace Corps Experience
Patricia Gillette, a returned Peace Corps volunteer in the Coast
Province of Kenya and retired health care executive, will present
"Life in Mariakani Kenya" as part of the International Mondays lecture
series. The presentation takes place from noon to 1 p.m. Feb. 23, in
Meeting Room A of the Iowa City Public Library.

Feeling Fit? Free Fitness Assessments Available Feb. 24
Health Iowa/Student Health will offer free fitness assessments from
5-7 p.m. Feb. 24 on the main deck at the UI Field House. The
assessments include blood pressure screening, resting heart rate, an
aerobic step test, and various muscular fitness tests. No appointment

Night of A Thousand Dinners March 5
Every year, nearly 20,000 people are killed or maimed by landmines and
30-40 percent of all mine victims are children. The local Night of a
Thousand Dinners will be one of thousands hosted around the world to
raise funds for Adopt-A-Minefield. The Iowa City event will be March 5
from 6-8 p.m. at the Old Brick Community Center. Tickets are available
at the Iowa United Nations Association Office (20 E. Market Street) or
by calling 337-7290.

Health Sciences Research Week Call for Posters
Poster registrations are now being accepted for poster sessions held
in conjunction with this year’s 2009 Research Week events. The
graduate student poster session will be held April 14, and the
postdoctoral fellow, faculty, and staff session will be April 15. Both
sessions will be held from 1-4 p.m. in the Medical Education and
Research Facility Atrium. The deadline for submitting posters is March
23 at 5 p.m.

Research Council Meeting Focuses on Translational Science
At the CPH Research Council Meeting on Feb. 19, Gary Hunninghake,
Director of the UI Institute for Clinical and Translational Science
(ICTS), updated researchers on various components of the institute.
He mentioned continued focused on educational initiatves and research
programs. Hunninghake also encouraged all CPH researchers to list
themselves on the research-focused social networking site, Loki, to
increase their opportunities for collaboration. Find it under
“research profiles” on the ICTS site.

Human Rights Program Provides Funding for International Internship
The Kenneth J. Cmiel Funded Human Rights Internship Program provides
funding to selected students who have secured a summer internship with
a local, national, or international non-governmental organization or
governmental agency engaged in human rights-related advocacy,
research, or education. Funds cover travel and living expenses
associated with the internship. The 2009 deadline is March 13.

The UI Office of Graduate Ethnic Inclusion offers a Graduate Diversity
Scholarship program designed to competitively award tuition
scholarships to graduate students from among groups disadvantaged
and/or underrepresented in their fields of graduate study. The

Subgroups comprised of faculty, staff, and students began meeting this
week to tackle the seven focus areas of the college’s strategic
planning initiative: education, external relations, faculty
recruitment and retention, global public health, infrastructure,
public health impact, and research foci and organization. Members of
these groups are developing draft plans that are due April 27.
