UI/VA Team Studies Effect of Exercise on Cognition in Parkinson's Disease
Researchers at the Iowa City Veterans Affairs Medical Center and the
University of Iowa, including Jeffrey Dawson, associate professor of
biostatistics, are investigating whether a very simple intervention --
aerobic exercise -- can produce physiological and neurological changes
that might lead to improved cognition in patients with Parkinson's
disease.

Class on 19th-Century Photography Offered March 4
Trace the history of photography from its introduction in 1839 until
the end of the 19th century and learn about photographic images using
copper, glass, and paper through an Osher Lifelong Learning Institute
class at the UI Center on Aging.

Farmers Invited to Farm Equipment/Vehicle Crash Prevention Conference
The UI Great Plains Center for Agricultural Health is inviting farmers
who want to help prevent crashes between farm equipment and motor
vehicles to apply for an opportunity to attend an expenses-paid
conference being held March 16-18 at the Hotel Fort Des Moines in Des
Moines, Iowa. Space is limited, and the registration deadline is March
6.

Grafft: Safety Is Every Farmer’s First Responsibility
(Iowa Farmer Today, 2/21/2009)
In his monthly safety column, LAMAR GRAFFT, a safety specialist for
Iowa’s Center for Agricultural Safety and Health, tells farmers to
make safety a priority. Rather than make legislative rules, Grafft
suggests numerous safety guidelines farmers should set for themselves
during various farm activities.

TALIB NAWFEL TALIB is one of only four Iraqi students at the UI. Talib
is working on his MPH and trying to get into dental school. Talib
wants to stay enrolled in school and stay in the United States. This

Researchers Address Alzheimer’s Drivers Safety
(New York Times, 2/24/2009)
Sooner or later, people who have Alzheimer’s disease will have to give
up the keys to the car. But figuring out when poses a problem for
doctors and families. Now, researchers, including JEFFREY DAWSON,
associate professor of biostatistics, have developed a series of
cognitive tests that may help doctors determine which early
Alzheimer’s patients are likely to pose a danger behind the wheel.

Timeline, FAQs Added to UI Budget Web Site
A new FAQ page and timeline has been added to the UI Budget web site.
The FAQs answer many of the common questions about the budget and
process. The estimated budget timeline notes important meetings,
events, and actions on the horizon that have some bearing on the
University's budget process.

UI to Address Living with Floods
The "Living With Floods" symposium will be March 11-12. It offers an
opportunity to better understand the disastrous floods of 2008.
Experts will address topics such as the science of floods, the
psychological impact of displacement, and more. Related to this, a
free lecture, "When will we ever learn? The challenge of dealing with
frequent flooding,” will be March 10 at 7:30 p.m. at 1505 Seamans
Center.

Professional Development Offered for Biomedical Researchers
A new professional development program for biomedical researchers will
begin in March. This certificate series is designed to provide an
overview of biomedical research and address the needs of research
staff. Participants who wish to earn the Biomedical Series certificate
will be required to take 12 courses over 12 months.
