of Iowa, based in the Department of Epidemiology, will be the focus of
a news briefing for media at 10 a.m. March 9 in the Kelch Conference
Room, room 1289, located in the Carver Biomedical Research Building.

Educators Respond to Evolution Bill
(Ames Tribune, 2/26/2009)
Some faculty from Iowa universities are calling for the state
Legislature to kill HF 183, “The Evolution Academic Freedom Act.”
Hector Avalos, ISU professor of religious studies; James W. Demastes,
UI associate professor of biology; and TARA SMITH, assistant professor
of epidemiology, released a statement and a petition with more than
200 signatures by faculty opposing HF 183.

Researchers studying air pollution particles
(Radio Iowa, 2/26/2009)
A UI research team has won a nearly $900,000 grant from the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency to study air pollution. Researchers,
including R. WILLIAM FIELD, professor of occupational and
environmental health and epidemiology; and JACOB OLESON, assistant
professor of biostatistics, will study the small particles that make
up pollution.

MRSA a Threat to Livestock, Humans
(Kansas City infoZine, 3/5/2009)
In a recent study of two Midwestern farming systems, TARA SMITH,
assistant professor of epidemiology, and colleagues found MRSA in
swine and their human handlers for the first time in the U.S.,
suggesting MRSA is now a problem outside of hospitals. "These are two
farming systems in this area. We're not sure how representative these
are to the bigger picture," Smith said.

CPH Launches Budget Update Web PageThe College of Public Health is working in concert with University of
Iowa leadership to develop responses to current economic conditions.
As additional information becomes available, it will be posted on the
College's new budget update web site.

Mark Your Calendar: CPH Budget Forums Set for March 23, 24
The College of Public Health will host open forums to address current
budget issues and invite feedback from CPH faculty, staff, and
students: Monday, March 23 at 4 p.m. in 124/125 IREH; and Tuesday,
March 24 at 3:30 p.m. in SE301 GH – Bean Conference Room.
It’s Not Too Late to Provide Feedback on the CPH Web Site
Please take a moment to tell us what you think about the redesigned
CPH web site, which was launched in August 2008. This short survey will
aid ongoing efforts to improve our site.

Meeting to Address Economy, Health Care
To increase awareness of the critical role health care plays in our
nation’s economy, the College of Public Health has partnered with The
Concord Coalition to organize a fiscal advisory council on health care: the
Iowa Committee for Value in Healthcare. On April 2, the committee will
hold a meeting in Des Moines to identify principles for high-value,
fiscally-responsible health care reform.

Patient Safety Conference to be March 11
The 4th Annual Patient Safety Conference will be held on March 11 at
the Scheman Center in Ames, Iowa. Keynote speaker, Steven Berkowitz,
will talk about the pressures of quality and the interrelationships
between data transparency, evidence-based practice and
pay-for-performance.

Nominations Accepted for CPH Flexible Pay Awards
Nominations are now being accepted for the Flexible Pay Awards. The
awards are aimed at recognizing exceptional performance among
non-organized professional and scientific staff. Nominations for the
Exceptional Performance Award and SPOT Performance Award
must be initiated by a supervisor and are due on March 13. For more

Wellmark Foundation Calls for Wellness Grant ProposalsThe Wellmark Foundation has issued two separate requests for
proposals. The teleconference for Growing Up LEAN: Living to be
Energetic, Active, & Nutritious Grant Program, focused on childhood
obesity prevention, will be March 12 with letters of interest due
April 21. The Healthy Communities Grant Program teleconference is July
29 with letters of interest due Sept. 3.
